She should go to the Winchester, have a nice cold pint, and wait for all of this to blow over.

So, remember all that stuff I said in my review for Volume 1? About how awesome it was that you didn’t really have to know anything about the character going in, and that the story was totally self-contained?  Forget all that.  This volume was basically the opposite of that.   The story starts with a brief flashback – a generic “years ago” in San Francisco – where our fearless Black Widow meets with Daredevil for a quick chat about right and wrong.  Why is Daredevil […]

Daredevil Season 3?

April 1, 2016 by Halbs 2 Comments

I have to preface this review by saying that Daredevil is on my Mount Rushmore of comic characters. He’s my guy. By day I’m an attorney and a person of faith, so I’m really into Matt Murdock’s worldview and how he wrestles with the balance of law, God, and justice. (If anyone cares, my other favorites are Moon Knight, Batman, and Booster Gold.) In a recent discussion of Netflix’ Daredevil series, someone online recently nudged me to Frank Miller’s Born Again, which collects  a story arc […]

Proud member of the Carol Corps, checking in for duty, sir.

Okay, first of all I just want to say that Secret Wars seems like an unholy mess. I shouldn’t have to spend thirty minutes on Wikipedia reading up about a bunch of crazy shit just to enjoy my Carol Danvers, dammit. I mean, did ANYONE read all the Secret Wars stuff? If so, did you understand all of it? Because that page makes it sound terrible. As for the comic itself, once I got the gist of the background, it was actually pretty great! Basically […]

Kamala is my squishy muffin.

Five stars for the actual Ms. Marvel story included here, written by G. Willow Wilson and drawn in full by the lovely Adrian Alphona. Minus a full star because the last two issues in this volume are a Spider-Man/Ms. Marvel team-up, which was fun enough when Ms. Marvel was there and kind of boring when she wasn’t, but my biggest issue is that it’s totally jarring to read them after the other four issues in the book. I say it’s jarring because Last Days, while […]

Goodbye, Kelly Sue. We hardly knew ye.

In case you’re curious, and too lazy to Google it, “Alis Volat Propriis” is Latin for “she flies with her own wings.” I think that’s lovely. It’s a lovely phrase, and it’s a lovely sentiment to end Kelly Sue DeConnick’s run on Captain Marvel. That said, man, I’m just not thrilled with the way this whole thing has turned out. I read Higher, Further, Faster, More earlier this year, and absolutely fell in love with it, and with Carol Danvers. Everything that has come after […]

Finishing the year, and my Cannonball, with a good one

December 28, 2015 by NTE 10 Comments

I’m probably the most ridiculous comics reader you’re going to find: I don’t like monthlies, because waiting is stupid; I read all the spoilers months (or years) before I get around to reading the actual comic; I kind of wish there were less pictures sometimes (I know: weird); and I’m an obsessive MCU fan who reads about 9000 times more fan fiction than she does canon. I’m not saying it’s normal, I’m just saying that’s how I read comics.  But Ms. Marvel has been on […]
