Change is What You Make of It.

December 18, 2017 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

I adore Kamala Khan, Ms. Marvel. I am so glad that G. Willow Wilson is writing her. I’m so happy this all exists. Kamala has come a long way from her exposure to the Terrigen mist and that first fan girly team up with Wolverine. Some members of her family know, she’s a member of the Avengers, and Jersey City has come to view her as their own superhero. But success and notoriety come with a price. Reputations can be changed with just a whisper, […]

More like Bore: Goddess of Thunder

September 21, 2017 by Halbs 1 Comment

This book includes three issues of the current Thor run, an issue of Thor Annual (a periodic collection of one-shot stories) and a What If? story from forty years ago (a story outside of the normal Marvel timeline). Unfortunately, despite the buffet of options, this collection features little thriller and a lot of filler. I’m disappointed that Marvel would put out a trade with only a few lackluster issues and then slap in some random Thor comics in the back. However, I did think that the […]

Kamala says be kind.

Volume seven and still going strong. I almost feel like I should knock on wood, because surely G. Willow Wilson can’t keep this up? Writing an emotionally affecting, funny, superhero comic that manages to transcend the limitations of its genre (mostly neverending mashups with other series, forced crossover storylines, etc.) The only “flaw” I can consistently identify in this series is that it sometimes betrays its other genre (young adult) by leaning a little too far into some of those tropes, getting a teensy bit […]

Write More Comics, Chelsea Cain!

September 11, 2017 by Halbs Leave a Comment

Going into this comic, the only thing I knew about Marvel’s superspy hero Mockingbird was that Tyra from Friday Night Lights (Adrianne Palicki) played her on tv. Smart, cheeky, and more than capable to beat up everyone in the room. Sounds good to me! That’s why I picked this one up from the library.  A few pages in, I was hooked. The writing is smart and fun. I laughed so much in this book that I assumed Kate Leth wrote it. Nope – Chelsea Cain […]

Thor: Goddess of Courage and Quips

September 6, 2017 by Halbs 2 Comments

I have no real knowledge of Thor other than the Marvel movies and some heavy metal songs that I kind of understand, so my background of Thor’s Marvel mythology is limited. Thor, that chiseled Norse god of the uncovered torso, can’t get it up. He can’t pick up Mjolnir, his hammer. It’s just sitting on a moon. He’s been trying for weeks to pick it up and it won’t budge. Thor won’t eat or sleep. Thor just wants to hammer, but he can’t. Finally, he […]

Somewhat Marvelous

August 18, 2017 by ingres77 Leave a Comment

It’s a little weird reading comics after so many years. I used to be an avid collector and dreamt of being an artist one day, until I figured out that I could get more entertainment for less money by reading novels. So I haven’t really read many comics in about 20 years. But I do miss the art. The art here by Adrian Alphona and David Lopez is pretty great, though very different, stylistically. Alphona is looser, less compact, which is actually perfect for the […]
