“I hate caring about stuff. But apparently once you start, you can’t just stop.”

Rogue Protocol by Martha Wells

June 30, 2025 by stegolily Leave a Comment

The third installment of The Murderbot Diaries season follows our favorite misanthropic cyborg as it gets pulled into another human conflict and wrestles with the annoying implications of having feelings and a moral compass. Murderbot has hitched a ride to the planet Milu in order to investigate an abandoned terraforming project run by GrayCris, the shady corporation that tried to kill Murderbots clients in the first book. Murderbot hopes to collect evidence of wrongdoing by GrayCris, both to help its friends back on Preservation Alliance, and […]

Kai didn’t recognize this place at all; it was a memory of somewhere he had never been

Witch King by Martha Wells.

With the new Murderbot adaption airing right now, I’ve been on the look out for more of Martha Wells books. The only other works of hers I’ve read have been The Books of the Raksura Series, which were mostly quite good—very different from Murderbot—but sort of a mixed bag overall. But one thing you cannot accuse Martha Wells of is lacking in creativity. Witch King is, again, vastly different from any of her previous novels, both in setting and narrative style. But it also shares […]

The Murderbot Diaries Vol. 2

The Murderbot Diaries Vol. 2 by Martha Wells

Wow. Again the two novellas I read were really good, no notes, five stars for both of them. I got asked about my book last night (I was out eating dinner solo) and I think I maybe got a former librarian to give this series a try. I love meeting book lovers out in the wild. Rogue Protocol-I will just say this ending gutted me, but I loved everything that lead up to it. We have Murderbot focusing on gathering evidence against GrayCris Corporation and […]

The Murderbot Diaries Vol. 1 by Martha Wells

The Murderbot Diaries Vol. 1 by Martha Wells

Well shit, I am all in. This was really good. People who have followed my reviews for a while know that I am a little…iffy on space opera books since I have not had a great time with them in the past. However, I am glad that I let a twee indie book seller push me on to “The Murderbot Diaries.” They were shocked I had never heard of the series and said well everyone is into them now cause of the series…so you all […]

If I was wrong, I’d probably be dead, and that was bad enough. Being stupid and dead would just be that much worse.

Fugitive Telemetry (The Murderbot Diaries #6) by Martha Wells

Network Effect (The Murderbot Diaries #5) by Martha Wells

Fugitive Telemetry Gurathin sighed and rubbed his face and looked off into the distance, like he regretted all his life choices that had led to him standing here right now. ― Martha Wells, Fugitive Telemetry I read these books one after the other. Even after reading them both, I’m not sure which is the correct order since I read Network Effect first, followed by Fugitive Telemetry. I think perhaps I should have read Fugitive Telemetry first, but reading it after Network Effect didn’t spoil anything. […]

Not Murderbot, but still good

Witch King by Martha Wells

March 7, 2025 by llp 1 Comment

I was first introduced to Martha Wells through the reviews of Emmalita – it still took me too long to get there, but once I started the series, I read each book in very quick succession. So, when I was travelling for work and ran out of book, I was so pleased to see Wells’ Witch King at my favourite bookstore. It was on sale! Hardcover! Reasonably sized for carry on! Our protagonist is Kaiiesteron, known as Kai, a demon whose spirit/soul lives in the […]
