Per usual, here are my reviews for each short story in the collection. Overall, this collection at times moved me and made me do more research on certain events brought up which is why my reading this week was slow (for me). Naomi’s Gift by Martha Hall Kelly (5 stars)-Phenomenal. You can figure out where Kelly is taking you, but I honestly was shocked at the the whole Holocaust camp for women/mothers/children. I keep thinking that there is nothing that could shock me at that […]

Based on the cover, you’d think this was about three friends. It’s really not, at all.

Lilac Girls: A Novel by Martha Hall Kelly

March 8, 2019 by CaribbeanClaire Leave a Comment

This was not what I was expecting at all.  I bought it ages ago and it’s been sitting on my Kindle for over a year.  I started it when I was travelling, I did not have the wifi turned on and so did not get the book summary when you open a book for the first time.  All I knew was this was set in WWII and featured three women from different walks of life, whose lives intersected somehow.  Based on the cover, they appear […]

“Father loved the fact that a lilac only blossoms after a harsh winter.”

November 22, 2018 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

Lilac Girls is loosely based on the real life stories of Caroline Ferriday, a New York socialite and philanthropist, and ambitious Ravensbrück doctor Herta Oberheuser. Kasia Kuzmerick, a Polish teenager working for the Underground, is a fictional character but based on a real woman. “It’s just a thing, Kasia. Don’t waste your energy on the hate. That will kill you sure as anything. Focus on keeping your strength. You’re resourceful. Find a way to outsmart them.” Caroline is a wealthy, single woman who volunteers at the French consulate at […]

Just Your Average, Forgettable World War II novel …

July 11, 2018 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I have been interested in the Holocaust and World War II since I was about 8 years old and have read quite a few novels, fictionalized accounts and nonfiction books on the topics as a result.  I have certainly taken breaks at various points but always tend to come back to the topic.  It also means there are certain types of books I am less likely to pick up based on previous experience.  While I liked Sarah’s Key on initial read because of the view […]
