Now that Bunnybean is tearing her way through the Lunar Chronicles books, I figured I might as well try and finish up the last book (I don’t count the new book of “related short stories” that just came out), Winter. I wasn’t all that excited about reading it, to be honest. I loved Cinder and Scarlet, and really liked Cress. And then I read Fairest. And I despised it. It really almost ruined the entire series for me. It was so heavy-handed and annoying, I […]
Every story really needs a Han Solo
Hi, everyone! I hope you’re having a great start to the year. I’m so excited to be doing cannonball read again! I just finished a book called Scarlet, which is the second book in the Lunar Chronicles. I’d like to thank Terri (ModernLove) for getting me the third book, Cress, for Christmas in the book swap. I can’t wait to start reading it! The book continues the story about Cinder, a mechanic who is cyborg. In the previous book, Cinder, Cinder is invited to the […]
You stumbled on the finish line there, Marissa
3.5 stars WARNING! This review WILL contain spoilers for earlier books in the series. Do NOT keep reading this review if you’re not caught up, having read all three previous books! There are also some minor spoilers for this book, but if you skip my list of dislikes, you’ll avoid them. Winter was one of the books I was most anticipating in the second half of 2015. Marissa Meyer’s retellings of Grimm fairy tales with a clever YA sci-fi dystopian twist just kept getting better […]
This book tried to do too much, and mostly failed at all of it. I’m very sadface about it.
So first of all, as a whole, I really love this series. I love the characters. I love the blending of sci-fi and fairy-tales. I love the epic, space-faring, international, futuristic scope of it. And I liked this book as well, but I didn’t love it. And as a book, and a series-ender, it was far from perfect. I’m really upset about not loving it, especially since each book since Cinder has been better than the last. I really thought Meyer had got her feet […]
Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?
The thing about sequels, or any book that comes after the first in a series, is that you’re never quite sure how they’re going to stack up to the first. Obviously, the first was good enough to get you to come back for more, but will it be as you remembered? Will the characters and story not only hold up, but progress? That’s the tricky part, I think. Sequels have to be better, have to push the story further along and really get you invested. […]
I’ve seen so many planets dancing
Poor Cress, man. In “The Lunar Chronicles,” Cress is our Rapunzel — locked away in a satellite orbiting Earth, performing high-tech intelligence operations under coercion by her Lunar mistress, who happens to be the chief aide to the evil Lunar Queen. So it could be said that Cress is the most important VIP whose political influence could never buy her own personal autonomy. Cress and our heroine of the long arc, Cinder, first crossed paths when Cinder intercepted classified data hidden by Cress in a […]
