Me and the Boss: A Story About Mending and Love. by Michele Edwards

Dragon Bones: The Fantastic Fossil Discoveries of Mary Anning by Sarah Glen Marsh

May 10, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I have not done a picture book marathon in a bit, and the most recent netted four books. Two of them have a lose theme of siblings. The Michele Edwards is an obvious sibling dynamic, where as the book about Mary Anning mentions her brother, and what he did to assist her, but the focus is on her. However, the other theme is that of you may be small, and you will need to take your time, but you can get the job done. I […]

Coral Reefs: Cities of the Ocean by Maris Wicks

April 29, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I will start off with, this is a book about coral reefs, so how did they manage to add at least two fart jokes and a belch? Very ingeniously! Coral Reefs: Cities of the Ocean is the basics of coral reefs. We see how they have inspired human inventions and architecture by the size, shapes, forms, and even the creatures that live among them. While the images are almost basic, there is a lot of goodness packed in. However, most pages are not too crowded. […]

Boldly Going Where No Woman had gone before (Well, that was the Soviet Union, but the US had firsts, too)

Astronauts: Women on the Final Frontier by Jim Ottaviani

January 28, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Astronauts: Women on the Final Frontier is not just a book about the Women of Space (the ones that inspired: calling Nichelle Nichols. And the ones that took the ride: calling Sally Ride. Sorry, must do one bad pun) but how they got there and what happened once they were. We see both the men and women who boldly went where no one went before. We see those who broken color and gender lines. We see the inner workings of training, the ships themselves and […]

“So Much for King Kong”

Primates: The Fearless Science of Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey, and Biruté Galdikas by Jim Ottaviani

January 23, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I had seen the book Primates since it came out in 2013 (hardcover) and 2015 (paper). I had no real interest in it at the time. It was non-fiction (which I have had a love-hate relationship with over the years) and judging by the cover, young and maybe a little preachy due to the subject. And while it is non-fiction, it is what I have started to call a non-fiction novel which allows stories to have the best of the novel-flow and the facts of […]
