Meadows of the Sea: The Wonders of Seagrass by Michelle Schaub

November 3, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Overall, Meadows of the Sea: The Wonders of Seagrass by Michelle Schaub is a good story about the ocean with the metaphor of showing how it is like a meadow. This idea makes something that seems unfamiliar and even alien, take on a form that we know and can understand. The poetic nature of the first part (the story) is reminiscent of the ocean flow itself. The fact that the second part (actual factual information) is added on the page allows the book to grow with […]

I only counted one of the four as they are short short (but cute) board books

Hello, Beach! by Katherine Pryor and Rose Soini

April 9, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

All three board books which were read, were read via an online reader copy. All (but the one I have not yet read) are currently available. If you like easy board books that have a seasonal overtone, then the Katherine Pryor and Rose Soini books are for you. We have the books Hello, Beach!, Hello, Rain!, and Hello, Garden!  And due in September 2025 is Hello, Snow! Overall, things are terribly simple as they are aimed at not just the board book crowd to look […]

Kerbel and Lo Present: Animals

What About an Elephant?: A Fact-Filled Savanna Adventure by Deborah Kerbel

What About an Octopus?: A Fact-Filled Underwater Adventure by Deborah Kerbel

April 7, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I was looking through a recent email sent to me via a publisher. They were promoting a few new books and What About an Elephant?: A Fact-Filled Savanna Adventure by Deborah Kerbel and illustrated by Dawn Lo was one of them (it is due in mid-August 2025). There was a companion title, What About an Octopus?: A Fact-Filled Underwater Adventure also by Kerbel and Lo (but is currently available) advertised as well. I looked around and found online reader copies for both. While I was […]

Don't Eat the Cleaners!: Tiny Fish with a Big Job by Susan Stockdale

The Search for Carmella by Chloe Savage

March 17, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Education, CBR17 Pie Chart Challenge One Monday morning I get into work smidgen later than usual, so my whole system is just off. During a moment of situating myself, I see that there are some books on the cart for the children’s floor. On top of a pile was a book of a red colored fish. It said “Grandmother Fish” and I thought, “Well it could be a cute story.” However, I only saw the first part and not the whole title: Grandmother Fish: A […]

Charles Addams, Shel Silverstein, AA Milne and Edward Gorey had a baby this would be its cousin.

The Boy Who Lived in a Shell: Snippets for Wandering Minds by John Himmelman

February 10, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

If Charles Addams, Shel Silverstein, AA Milne and Edward Gorey had a baby this would be its cousin. The Boy Who Lived in a Shell: Snippets for Wandering Minds by John Himmelman is not necessarily spooky or kooky like Addams or Gorey; or rhyming like Silverstein and does not have the sweetness or innocence of Milne, but a mixture that is all its own. Due mid-March 2025, I read via an online reader’s copy. The stories the boy talks about, or actually writes, are on […]

Queen of Play Makes Everyone’s Day

Odder: An Otter's Story (Picture book) by Katherine Applegate and Charles Santoso

January 30, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I was in the right mood the other day when I found an online copy of Odder: An Otter’s Story (Picture book) by Katherine Applegate and Charles Santoso (the lovely illustrator). Because this book could be considered overly saccharine and too sugary sweet. And when something is overly sweet I can really be a real Scrooge and a Humbug it. Yet, I was in the mood for something sweet, cuddly that just might make you have a tear (or ten) in your eye. Due in […]
