I love Margaret Atwood. Joe Hill named a boat after her in The Fireman (review forthcoming), and I may have squealed a little in delight when I saw it. I’m still getting through her whole bibliography — I love going to Half Price Books and seeing if they have anything by her that I’ve missed. Her novels and short stories rarely miss the mark for me. Wilderness Tips, a short story collection published in 1991, does not disappoint. “The girls in the stories make such fools of themselves. They are […]
“There’s the story, then there’s the real story, then there’s the story of how the story came to be told. Then there’s what you leave out of the story. Which is part of the story too.”
I was a little nervous to start MaddAddam, because while I quite like the first book of the series, Oryx and Crake, I didn’t love the second, Year of the Flood. So I was worried about how things would wrap up. Luckily, MaddAddam was fantastic — probably the best of the three. “The people in the chaos cannot learn. They cannot understand what they are doing to the sea and the sky and the plants and the animals. They cannot understand that they are killing them, and that they […]
Penelope’s Song
One of my goals for this year is to read more Margaret Atwood. Another goal is to keep up with my book reviews. So far I am one for two on those. I mean, I read this book a few weeks ago. It’s ridiculous! What’s also ridiculous is Margaret Atwood’s mastery of two Western classics. Full review on my blog, The Universe Disturbed.
Margaret Atwood’s moral dis-order
I’ve been trying to read my way through Margaret Atwood, and I thought with the end of the year approaching, I would try out a collection of short stories. While I tend to prefer Atwood’s novels best, I do like the collections I’ve encountered thus far (admittedly, though, Atwood is an incredibly prolific writer, and I’ve only scratched the surface of her work). Moral Disorder is an interesting and engaging collection. Told from various vantage points, Moral Disorder connects the same timeline from various points […]
Book Exchange Goodies from ardaigle!!!
Good God, how embarrassing. This is my first post this year, and I only posted once last year. I am bound and determined to do better next year. In any case, I am over the moon about participating in this year’s exchange (at least THAT tradition is going strong!!)!! I’ve been DYING to read The Handmaid’s Tale, and I was lucky enough to get paired with Atwood expert ardaigle in this year’s exchange!! She ALSO got me Julia Child’s classic, Mastering the Art of French Cooking, […]
New from Margaret Atwood — featuring a surprising amount of sex with chickens
This one started out great but went downhill about 2/3rds of the way through. I love Margaret Atwood, and I don’t mind when she gets a little weird, but this one had just a little too much weirdness for me. “I don’t think they’ll ever replace the living and breathing,” says Gary. “They said that about e-books,” says Kevin. “You can’t stop progress.” Sometime in the (probably near) future, the economy has gone way downhill. After losing their jobs, Charmaine and Stan have been reduced to living a […]
