“All of a sudden, I became half-human!” — Human/Cat Boy Romance Manga

A Lovestruck Cat Wants to be Petted by Nira Kaneyuki

February 12, 2025 by GentleRain Leave a Comment

I really enjoyed A Lovestruck Cat Wants to be Petted. It did exactly what it says in the title and hit the right sweet spot of minimal conflict and a cute developing relationship between the two main characters. Kotetsu is a cat who has been turned into a human through some unknown force and still has cat ears and tail that he has to hide. He can also talk to cats and has a cat friend that knew him before his transformation. He goes to […]

“I don’t know what to do. I’d normally never go for a guy like him.”

White Liar by Tomo Serizawa

February 9, 2025 by GentleRain Leave a Comment

Kei Shiraishi is a hair stylist (and also maybe a makeup artist? But they never really show that in the book — the back cover describes him as a “beautician,” but I never saw him doing anything but hair) who gets picked to cut the hair of a famous up and coming actor. Taiga Jinnouchi is super handsome and an amazing actor, but he gets deep into his characters and it’s stressful on his system. After Kei cuts Taiga’s hair, they have dinner together and […]

“When we were growing up, our parents wouldn’t buy us things, so we worked hard and now we can: buy all volumes of manga, buy toys in bulk, buy DVD box sets”

Insufficient Direction by Moyoco Anno

February 9, 2025 by GentleRain Leave a Comment

Insufficient Direction is a humorous autobiographical manga by Moyoco Anno, the wife of Hideaki Anno, who direction Neon Genesis Evangelion. Moyoco is a manga artist and this book chronicles their life together. The main theme is that Hideaki is a huge otaku and Moyoco is trying to remain normal but keeps getting sucked deeper and deeper into an otaku lifestyle. It’s interesting reading this from the 2024 viewpoint of the nerds having taken over the earth and casting my mind back to when being a nerd […]

The Game Might Be Changing but not the Characters

My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! v.9 by Satoru Yamaguchi, Nami Hidaka

February 9, 2025 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I have been a little desperate for the cozy; not only is the world (you know, gestures at the state of things), but there’s been some other unfortunately timed drama beyond my control in my life as well. Cozy mindless manga to the rescue! My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! Is definitely cozy. The friendship angle always wins, and nothing bad lasts for more than a few pages. In volume 9 of the manga, Katarina is happily awaiting the end […]

Inuyasha VIZBIG vol. 1

From the creator of Ranma…. It’s Inuyasha!

Inuyasha, vol 1-18 (vizbig) by Rumiko Takahashi

February 7, 2025 by vega-table Leave a Comment

20ish years ago, a cousin gave me the first volume of the Inuyasha manga because it was “just like” Ranma ½, which I loved. I found it was almost nothing like Ranma and the cousin admitted that even though the two series were both by Rumiko Takahashi, they didn’t actually have much in common (that I was interested in). No one would ever get hit on the head with a fowl training potty in Inuyasha. I’d never see a yeti riding a bull while holding […]

“My name is Maruru. Due to certain circumstances, I’m living my life as a stray.”

Cat Companions Maru and Hachi (Volume 1) by Yuri Sonoda

Cat Companions Maru and Hachi (Volume 2) by Yuri Sonoda

February 5, 2025 by GentleRain Leave a Comment

Cat Companions Maruru and Hachi is a deceptively cute portrayal of the life and death struggles that street cats endure. Maruru is a purebred house cat who runs out of his house to chase sparrows and can’t find his way back home. Life as a stray cat is full of dangers that he did not expect, from the near impossibility of getting food and clean drinking water to trying to keep from freezing to death in the winter. He runs across an experienced street cat, […]
