A Sweet Supernatural Afterlife Gay Romance Manga

Love in Limbo (Vol 1-2) by HAJI

February 15, 2024 by GentleRain Leave a Comment

I kept eyeing this at Barnes and Noble because I thought the cover art was nice, and I finally gave in and got the two volumes. The nice thing here is that the story is complete in two volumes, so it’s not a huge money or time investment. The con is that it’s only two volumes, so the plot is a little rushed and I wish we could have spent more time in this world. The author has a lot of interesting ideas about Limbo […]

I’ve been reading a ton of BL, so here are some pocket reviews because I’m overwhelmed at the thought of writing individual reviews for all of these. I really love this genre and think the work being done in it is very interesting and engaging. I also continue to be glad that the books getting licensed and translated right now have much better art across the board then when I first started reading BL around 2004. A Hero in the Demon’s Castle has a unique […]

The end of an era but not really

My Hero Academia Vigilantes, vols. 14-15 by Hideyuki Furuhashi, Betten Court

January 7, 2024 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

My Hero Academia Vigilantes is a side series, and it’s just wrapped up.  The main series is apparently in the process of winding up its final story but who knows how long that takes. The final two volumes of vigilantes show  the conclusion of the final epic battle and hints at the not too distant futures for those who survive (mostly). Koichi aka Crawler, the seemingly lucky idiot who wants to be a hero but not an official one, has been facing off against the […]

Two Manga Focusing on Fan Culture

If My Favorite Pop Idol Made It to the Budokan, I Would Die (Vol 1-2) by Auri Hirao

My Coworker Has a Secret! (Vol 1-2) by Mushiro

January 7, 2024 by GentleRain Leave a Comment

The contrast between these series was interesting, because both deal with idol fandom culture and the impact it has on the fan. Both are also light romantic comedies, but I enjoyed My Coworker Has a Secret! much more. If My Favorite Pop Idol Made It to the Budokan, I Would Die follows Eripiyo, who is a huge fan of Maina. Maina is an idol in an underground idol group and is the least popular, with Eripiyo being her only real fan. The main reason is […]

“It wasn’t what I expected when I first met her…but it turns out that Nada’s not that different from my other friends.”

Satoko and Nada Vol. 1 by Yupechika

January 6, 2024 by GentleRain Leave a Comment

This was a random find at Barnes and Noble, and since it was marked down to $7 and I used my $5 rewards, I technically got it for $2. A real deal thanks to the Book Annex discount the store does. Probably due to this title not selling well enough for them to discount it, they only had volume 1 and 3, so I only got volume 1. While I did like it, I don’t think I liked it enough to track down volume 2. […]

“You remind me of those bullies:” Bullying Purporting to be Romance

Sick by Tomo Kurahashi

January 2, 2024 by GentleRain Leave a Comment

Sick starts off with Sudou feeling confident and happy in his social status, as he’s rich and popular on campus. However, he finds himself teasing and bullying the other student in his science course, with their opening scene together being Sudou tripping Kishi to the ground and smirking. Something about Kishi makes Sudou want to torment him, to the point that he invites him out to group drinks, then corners him alone in the bathroom and starts kissing and groping him. Sudou’s friend points out […]
