Not a buddy movie

Stray by Ryu Kamio

November 25, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Reading via an online reader copy is sometimes hard for me. But I persevere and just keep swimming, I mean reading. But with Stray there was the added issue of a big ol’ “watermark” in the middle of things. Nope, they did not want people copying the manga comic by Ryu Kamio and illustrator Nakamura Yuu. Plus, it is manga and therefore, the flow is off for my western eyes to start. With that said, a few days after starting, I finished this Yakuza meets […]

Ghostly and Green

Toilet-bound Hanako-kun vol.22 by Aidalro

November 1, 2025 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo 22: Green The cover is green. Thematically, there’s a potential sense of a potential new season of life (kind of a stretch but possible)., like spring means natural green coming back. Toilet-bound Hanako-kun (vol 22) is a weird little ghost story, sometimes going for spooky, sometimes going for cutesey. This volume jumps into one adventure, finishes the first segment, and cues up the next part of the arc. The time-keeper supernaturals have ‘arrested’ Yashiro whose been turned into a toddler along with Hanako, Amane […]

I’m not the audience. Are you?

Magical Beatdown, Vol 1 by Jenn Woodall

October 29, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I think it is time to either pause or cancel my Silver Sprocket subscription. I had gotten several books that I enjoyed and never would have read otherwise if it hadn’t been for this subscription. But in a recent shipment I had nothing but disappointing reads. The first I read was Magical Beatdown, Vol 1 by Jenn Woodall. It is a short zine that is created with light (almost faded, but still popping) blue and pink colors, quickly drawn looking lines and is overly simplified. […]

Yep, just cats and games. CBRBINGO – Play

Cat + Gamer, Vol. 1 by Wataru Nadatani

Cat + Gamer, Vol. 2 by Wataru Nadatani

Cat + Gamer, Vol. 3 by Wataru Nadatani

Firstly, big thanks to vega-table for the heads up that this even exists! I was having trouble finding a book that would work for this BINGO square, and this was just so perfect, because it’s short and easy to read, and it’s about cats. My library system actually has quite a bit of manga in it’s catalog, and that’s how I read most of the manga I have read. Luckily they had this one, too, and it was free! God bless libraries and librarians. Protect […]

Dance Dance Dance….

Emma & Capucine, Volume 1 by Jérôme Hamon and Lena Sayaphoum

September 18, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

While I enjoyed reading the two parts that are inclined in  Emma & Capucine, Volume 1 by Jérôme Hamon and Lena Sayaphoum, I was not able to be WOWed by it. There is nothing new to the events or thoughts happening. However, it is still a nice coming of age story Part One. We deal with growing apart from an older sibling, dealing with a dream not happening, finding new dreams, parents learning to support rather than push for themselves, and jealousy. There are at […]

“I” is for “Insomniacs”

Insomniacs After School vol. 1 by Makoto Ojiro

August 20, 2025 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo 7: “I” is for “Insomniacs” Title: “Insomniacs After School”; relevance to the “I” square self-explanatory. I was kind of surprised how much I liked this for it being a high school slice of life kind of thing. Basic plot is two students with legit sleep issues (for very different reasons – one seemingly medical, the other potentially emotional) bond over finding a good nap spot in the abandoned astronomy observatory at their school.  Then it turns into a school club story when a teacher […]
