Road trip!

Peter & Ernesto: The Lost Sloths by Graham Annable

November 29, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

As you know I greatly enjoy First Second graphic novels. But even a favorite publisher (or author) can have a bust occasionally. And I was afraid the Peter & Ernesto: The Lost Sloths was going to be one for them. And it almost was a not good book, as it started out weak. Thankfully it did pick up as the simple story went on. The large panels help block the story. Easy/early readers could have fun exploring the text and illustrations. Some names of the […]

An homage to Granny, the world’s oldest known orca, who lived to be 105 years old!

Wild Orca: The Oldest, Wisest Whale in the World by Brenda Peterson

June 26, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Wild Orca: The Oldest, Wisest Whale in the World has a little quirk that at first, I missed (looking back, it was pretty obvious). The Granny the young girl speaks of is not her Granny, but Granny the orca whale that is the matriarch of three different pods of whales called J, K and L. My first clue something was up was the fact Granny might not show up if she was busy, and since she was busy being 105 years-old, that might be the case. […]

Make sure you wear your best scent

Wonder Mole's Scent Costume Party  by Pato Mena

June 19, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Wonder Mole’s Scent Costume Party by Pato Mena was another book that there was great potential to the story but fell a more than a little flat at the end. The theme of having a “scent party” instead of a costume party for the moles, is a hoot. This is because moles are mostly blind and do not see well. Therefore, any fancy costumes are lost on them, but a good scent of a giraffe or other critter, is a feast for the nose! The lead up of […]

Trot right over and find this foxy number!

Little Fox in the Snow by Jonathan London

January 14, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Little Fox in the Snow is a beautiful, realistic story of what a fox does (hunts mice, rabbits, explores and more). This is a refreshing twist to modern stories. Jonathan London tells you this is what a fox is. They are an animal that preys on the mouse and rabbit. However, it is done tastefully. You know the fox will eat the mouse and rabbit (London tells you this) but it is not “blood guts and gore.” The fact that the fox has an enemy […]

Everything okay, even the Armadillo

October 10, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I really adore Sandra Boynton’s work. Her whimsical, quirky and bright illustrations and delightfully charming text has many memories of reading to children or just experiencing it with the eyes of a child well into my adulthood. When I saw that she had a new book coming out I was overjoyed! But perhaps I was expecting too much. Perhaps I just had too high hopes for it, but when I read But Not the Armadillo it did not live up to expectations. Sadly, it just […]
