Where everything is explained

Revenge of the Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell

November 4, 2025 by Sophia Leave a Comment

CBR17Bingo: “Play” – because Gladwell discusses sports at Harvard I read The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell back in 2009 and found it interesting. Since then I’ve read a number of other books by Gladwell that I’ve liked in varying amounts. When I saw that Gladwell had written Revenge of the Tipping Point: Overstories, Superspreaders, and the Rise of Social Engineering (2024), I was curious enough to pick up the audiobook. Gladwell uses examples to show how overstories, superspreaders, and group makeup influence a number of things in our […]

Interesting enough, but with some glaring blindspots

Talking to Strangers: what we should know about the people we don't know by Malcolm Gladwell

December 23, 2020 by Merryn Leave a Comment

This was an interesting but ultimately frustrating read.  In his engaging style, Gladwell unpacks a set of human psychological traits that lead us to be very bad at assessing the motives of people we don’t know.  But for a book that centres the tragic death of Sandra Bland, there is a huge hole at the centre.  Every interaction with a stranger is shaped by our race, gender and position on a multitude of other social hierarchies that are barely acknowledged to Gladwell’s analysis. After starting […]

Talking to Strangers is about neither strangers nor talking

Talking to Strangers by Malcolm Gladwell

This book is bad. Don’t read it. Why? Gladwell is clearly an intelligent man. He isn’t blind to the injustices in the world. This book however, seems to suggest that how he has learned to cope with those injustices, built on a society designed to benefit him in many ways, is to dismiss the idea of there being systems in place to perpetuate harm which is not only bad for the individual but for society. It’s premise is that the reason for so many tragic […]

I found myself talking back to the audiobook

Talking to Strangers by Malcolm Gladwell

May 17, 2020 by Sophia 1 Comment

I’ve read at least four books by Malcolm Gladwell, and I’ve found them consistently interesting and educational. So, I was pretty excited when I was finally able to check out the audio version of Talking to Strangers: What We Should Know about the People We Don’t Know (2019) by Malcolm Gladwell. The audio version was billed as more of a podcast experience. Whenever possible, real audio clips of real people were used, and there was even a theme song that recurred throughout the book. It was also […]

Let’s talk about this

Talking to Strangers by Malcolm Gladwell

February 27, 2020 by thewheelbarrow 1 Comment

I’ve liked every Malcolm Gladwell book I’ve read and that includes this one. Prior to reading it, I feel like I read a lot of criticism about Gladwell and the book. That criticism came from the cesspool that is Twitter, which means that I was aware there was criticism but I don’t know EXACTLY what the root cause was which is why I looked it up to better understand the issues behind the criticism. It seems to me that most of the criticism is (1) […]

Bad Gladwell is still Gladwell

Talking to Strangers by Malcolm Gladwell

December 31, 2019 by octothorp Leave a Comment

It’s like pizza, even when a Malcolm Gladwell book is bad, it’s still pretty good. You don’t need to know what it’s about to know what it’s like; Gladwell culls interesting sources to prove his thesis through anecdotal examples in an accessible and engaging way.  The hard part here is that that thesis is unclear and there’s not really enough to support his case. The idea that much of racism or prejudice is a matter of talking to others from a different frame of reference […]
