The Most Fun Librarians Ever

July 17, 2016 by CoffeeShopReader 2 Comments

Did you ever wonder how all the books in the “Silence of the Library” and “Forest of the Dead” got in the Library? It might have gone something like this: Irene the junior Librarian for the Invisible Library, a secret organization that seeks out rare and unique books to collect in the library by traveling through different parallel dimensions with various degrees of technology and magic, goes on missions to retrieve them. She’s a pretty good secret agent, but sometimes she runs into unexpected adventures. […]

4,100 pages of perpetual youth.

I read these books last month, but wanted to save them to celebrate my Cannonball. When I was a teenager, I thought I read a lot. But I don’t think I ever read 40 books in a year before. Last year, reading mostly historical biographies, I only made it to 29 (my goal was 12, though). So I didn’t expect to really be able to make it this year. So I’m pleasantly surprised that I was able to make it in approximately six months. So, […]

A promising new fantasy series (without a single white character!)

July 2, 2016 by Malin 1 Comment

3.5 stars Resorting to the blurb for a plot summary, because I need to get my reviews up to date, and trying to come up with my own synopsis takes too long: The Crescent Moon Kingdoms are at a boiling point. A struggle between the iron-fisted Khalif and the mysterious Falcon Prince is reaching its climax. In the midst of this brewing rebellion, a series of brutal supernatural murders strike at the heart of the Kingdoms. Doctor Adoulla Makhslood, three score and more years old, […]

I always feel like a chump for having zero magical powers when clearly the world is full of magicians and superpowered beings!

The Everything Box is superfun! I added it to my library queue after some happy Cannonball Read reviews, and am so glad I did. I read almost this entire book in one sitting. I would best describe this as Neil Gaiman Lite, which is NOT a criticism. There is a richness missing that would make it a full Gaiman experience, but sometimes you don’t need the bone marrow spread on top of the rib-eye on top of cheesy polenta. Sometimes you just want a salad […]

YYou’re the Chosen One! No… You’re the Chosen One! Wait who’s the Chosen One?

Rating: 4/5 Summary: After spending the summer apart, Titus and Iolanthe are eagerly awaiting the start of term at Eton. Planning a romantic getaway in the Crucible is a lot easier when Atlantis isn’t trying to kill you. Before their relationship can pass the physical barrier, they stumble upon another great elemental mage. Is Iolanthe the Chosen One or is this other mage the Chosen One? Titus is trapped between the two with only his mother’s visions to guide him and they haven’t been helping. […]
