Trial by Treason by Dave Duncan

June 2, 2019 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Much like the first Enchanter General novel, Trial by Treason includes a good bit of real history mixed into an adventure involving magic, some good and some bad. Durwin is pretty standard for an underdog hero, but he’s likeable. His new sidekick Eadig could use a little more character, and so could Louise, the love interest. Her and Durwin’s romance is thankfully not overdone, but it does seem a little rushed. The basic premise is that the moment Durwin receives his certification as a sage […]

Probably more my fault than the book….

The Book of English Magic by Richard Heygate, Philip Carr-Gomm

May 26, 2019 by TheShitWizard Leave a Comment

The Book of English Magic turned out to have two very special magic powers: It made me realise that I’m nowhere near as open-minded as I think I am, and It managed to make one minute of reading fell like ten years of slogging through swampland Let me explain… Despite not being at all spiritual or religious myself, I do enjoy reading about the beliefs that some people hold as a way of trying to better understand them. Whilst I’ve often then arrived at some […]

Consider my Pot, Boiled

A Dead Djinn in Cairo by P. Djèlí Clark

The Haunting of Tram Car 015 by P. Djèlí Clark

May 21, 2019 by MarTeaNi Leave a Comment

It started with John Constantine, grouchy creepy detective magician, solving petty punk mysteries and sassing demons.  I love a good pot boiler, but I like them with wizards, or gods, or most preferably ghosts.  My collection is an embarrassment of sassy magicians solving ghost crimes. An anonymous Twitter surfaced in my feed one day to recommend the short story A Dead Djinn in Cairo. Special Investigator Fatma el-Sha’arawi of the Ministry of Alchemy, Enchantments and Supernatural Entities must investigate the potential suicide of powerful djinn […]

A promising start to a new series

King of Scars by Leigh Bardugo

May 12, 2019 by Malin Leave a Comment

Spoiler warning! While this is the start of a new series, it does follow on directly from Leigh Bardugo’s Grisha trilogy and her Six of Crows duology. While you will understand the plot fine if you haven’t read the previous books, you WILL be spoiled for events in both series. Spoilers may also appear in this review. Proceed at your own risk. From Goodreads, because I finished the audiobook two months ago (sigh): Nikolai Lantsov has always had a gift for the impossible. No one knows what he endured in […]

A Little Less Sparkle the Second Time Around

The Ancient Magus Bride The Silver Yarn by Kore Yamazaki et al.

April 14, 2019 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

The second The Ancient Magus Bride short story collection, The Silver Yarn, had some ups and downs, and in the end I wasn’t quiet as in love with the stories as with the first collection. I think maybe it was partially expectations, and partly the fact that the first collection had more references to the original characters and series. This set was still entertaining, it just didn’t have the same sparkle. Three stories stood out for me this time, and as it turns out, they […]

“I’m worth twelve of you, Malfoy.”

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by JK Rowling

April 13, 2019 by Blingle Bells 1 Comment

How the hell am I supposed to review Harry freaking Potter? Just the fifth best-selling book in any language of all time, nbd. I’m sure I have some original thoughts on it. I read this 12ish years ago but I was a different human then. I’ve started and finished a bachelor’s degree, gotten married, had a child, gained an astronomical amount of context, perspective, and life experience since then. I’ve also had a memory-wiping coma. One of my few resolutions this year was to reread […]
