There’s a good story in here somewhere

The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater

February 18, 2021 by lowercasesee Leave a Comment

I’m in a long-running chat with a boatload of Maggie Stiefvater fans so after reading the Raven Boys series last year, I finally got around to Scorpio Races this year. I got it as an audiobook and while I appreciated the dual narrators (as I did for Emergency Contact) I just … I dunno. This one didn’t do it for me. This was another audiobook I cranked to 1.5x just to get through it. It’s not that it isn’t a compelling story. I have a soft spot for […]

A dream is a wish your heart makes (Cannonball!)

Call Down the Hawk by Maggie Stiefvater

July 31, 2020 by Malin 6 Comments

#CBR12 Bingo: Orange (would also work for Fresh Start) This is the start of a new series, so it stands alone. You don’t have to have read Stiefvater’s Raven Cycle series, starting with The Raven Boys, but it gives a lot of useful background to Ronan and the other Lynch brothers.   Official book description: The dreamers walk among us . . . and so do the dreamed. Those who dream cannot stop dreaming – they can only try to control it. Those who are dreamed cannot have their […]

Reads darker than it is, overall worth it

The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater

The Dream Thieves by Maggie Stiefvater

Blue Lily, Lily Blue by Maggie Stiefvater

The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater

This is a series I’m genuinely surprised I hadn’t heard about sooner. It’s right up my alley – young adult, vaguely supernatural, lots of mystery, everything about this series has me written all over it. It’s even been out for a couple of years! Still not sure where the ball dropped for me on this one. A broad overview: our main character is Blue Sargent, a teenage non-psychic living in the Shenandoah Valley near a prep boarding school (Aglionby) full of boys she broadly cannot […]

“It is the first day of November and so, today, someone will die.”

The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater

February 15, 2020 by tikkersweet Leave a Comment

I am not that familiar with the Kelpies or other water horse folklore so I don’t know how much of this story is based on folklore or just the writers imagination but man eating water horses, I’m in!  The setting for the story is an island named Thisby and the book does a great job getting that small town feel, where some people can’t wait to get off of the island and others could not picture any other life.   The islands economy is made up […]

#CBR10Bingo: Birthday – All the Crooked Saints

September 3, 2018 by Malin Leave a Comment

#CBR10 Bingo: Birthday (Ms Stiefvater’s birthday is November 11th) From Goodreads, because it sums it up nicely: Here is a thing everyone wants: A miracle. Here is a thing everyone fears: What it takes to get one. Any visitor to Bicho Raro, Colorado is likely to find a landscape of dark saints, forbidden love, scientific dreams, miracle-mad owls, estranged affections, one or two orphans, and a sky full of watchful desert stars. At the heart of this place you will find the Soria family, who all […]

Catching up with Adam and Ronan

April 19, 2018 by Malin Leave a Comment

This is a short story set after the events of The Raven King, the fourth and final novel in The Raven Cycle. There will be spoilers for some of the plot in those books, so if you want to remain entirely unspoiled and haven’t yet read these excellent books, come back after you’ve caught up. Told in a somewhat disjointed and sometimes confusing way by Opal, the little dream creature created by Ronan, the readers get to see some of what is happening in the lives of Ronan […]
