Nonetheless, I still want to be a lighthouse keeper

The Light Between Oceans by M. L. Stedman

December 30, 2019 by andtheIToldYouSos Leave a Comment

I read Ahab’s Wife at an impressionable age and it filled me with a deep hatred of whales (unfair to them, I know) and a fierce desire to be a lighthouse keeper. Despite many things keeping me from a serious pursuit of such an endeavor (I keep moving further and further away from the ocean, the aforementioned hatred of whales, my reliance on the internet…) I will always jump at the chance to read something lighthouse adjacent. The Light Between Oceans starts off strong- a quiet and […]

Super blah, but I still got choked up at the end

The Light Between The Oceans by M. L. Stedman

May 15, 2019 by lowercasesee Leave a Comment

The Light Between the Oceans kept popping up as “recommended” for me so I finally gave in and read it. And it’s not a bad book, it’s just not my kind of book. The circumstances and setting are fascinating but ultimately I was more than happy to move on to my next read. Good for someone, not for me. The primary characters of this book are a lighthouse keeper, Tom, and his young wife, Isabelle. He has taken the posting on Janus Island, a hundred […]

The Bloat Between Oceans

April 20, 2017 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

**Sort of spoilery review, because I have things I need to say.** I picked up this book as it was the April pick for my local library book club, of which I am a new member. I put it off because I knew this was not my kind of book. I had heard of the film adaptation and scene the trailers, and it seemed like a good movie, just not my kind of movie. I am not one for pain, and this movie (and book) […]

What happens in Janus, doesn’t always stay on Janus

March 13, 2016 by Caitlin_D 1 Comment

I believe I am the third or fourth Cannonballer to post a review on M.L Stedman’s the Light Between Oceans this week alone; I would imagine we are all Pajiba readers as well who happened to see the trailer for the movie adaptation the site recently posted. Tom Sherbourne came to tend the lighthouse on Janus, a tiny island off the coast of Australia, after several years at the front lines of WWI. Before he leaves for a several years stay he meets Isabel in […]

“That’s what bravery is. Standing by the consequences of your mistakes.”

March 11, 2016 by expandingbookshelf 1 Comment

On a desolate island miles from civilization, a man finds himself faced with an impossible choice. The man is Tom, a stoic, principled veteran, recently returned to Australia after serving in World War I. He’s damaged goods, carrying a heavy load of guilt for being one of the few to actually make it home from the war, alive and physically unscathed. He finds a job that speaks to his solitary tendencies as a lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock, an isolated island about half a day’s […]

The light has gone dark

March 7, 2016 by badkittyuno 1 Comment

I read this one because it’s going to be turned into a movie starring two of my Pajiba Ten — Michael Fassbender & Rachel Weisz. Unfortunately, having read the book, there is no way in hell that I’m going to go see the movie. “You only have to forgive once. To resent, you have to do it all day, every day. You have to keep remembering all the bad things.” So, the basic summary of the plot: Tom and Izzy Sherbourne live on the deserted Janus […]
