Action adventure in space with queer representation!

The Disasters by M. K. England

March 20, 2022 by Dome'Loki 1 Comment

I missed out when The Disasters was the Cannonball Book Club pick but have finally made up for lost time.  This book immediately kick into high gear and doesn’t stop until the conclusion.  Science fiction is a favorite genre of mine and this was so fun, as well as refreshing with the LGBTQ+ representation. All Nax has ever wanted was to be a pilot.  The best way to do so is to become a cadet in the Space Academy and then migrate to the off Earth […]

The Disasters by M.K. England

#CBR12 Bingo: Violet (Obviously also works for Book Club, and will fit into Debut and maybe UnCannon and Friendship, as well)   All Nax Hall has ever dreamed of is going Ellis Station Academy and qualifying as a pilot. Unfortunately, he fails his entrance exam and is sent packing after less than twenty-four hours. Sharing his fate are Rion, Case and Zee, and while they’re all waiting for their one-way shuttle back to Earth, they are witness to a terrorist attack on the space station. The […]

Two flavors of Did Not Finish

Code Name Helene by Ariel Lawhon

The Disasters by M.K. England

Code Name Helene This book is based on the life of Australian reporter Nancy Wake, who worked as a British spy during World War II. The novel switches between her life aiding the Resistance in 1944 and when she met her husband 8 years earlier.  Real talk, I downloaded this early one morning before I was fully awake and then promptly forgot I had it. I was surprised and pleased when I discovered it on my tablet later that day. I absolutely loved the Alice […]

Catasterous disastrophe

The Disasters by M. K. England

June 30, 2020 by octothorp Leave a Comment

The problem with stories about losers is that they’re almost never about losers. They’re about winners in loser’s clothing. We don’t love stories about underdogs so much as we love stories where the discrepancy between the start and the finish is as large as possible. We love underdogs when they WIN. I mean, with a book where 3/5ths of our characters are LGBTQ, I certainly don’t WANT anything truly traumatic to happen to them (real life is bad enough, thanks), and England does a fantastic […]

The Disasters by M.K. England

June 27, 2020 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

My reading intake has dropped off considerably since May, but book club kept me with my hand in the game so to speak, because I really enjoyed my first choice, The Disasters by M.K. England. This book ended up on our selection list because I saw an interesting write-up about it and thought hey, I want to read that book. Sometimes it pays to be the Book Club Maven. (I also read I Hope You Get This Message , I had previously read The Long […]
