Like a Hallmark movie in book form, and all that implies.

The Holiday Swap by Maggie Knox

December 31, 2021 by narfna 2 Comments

I feel badly about the review I’m about to write, because it betrays a cynicism I like to squash when possible, but I feel like this book was published (and picked by Book of the Month) because publishers knew it would sell, and not because it was anything special. This is similar to the way that Hallmark Christmas movies are cheaply made, poorly written, and at best acted with mediocrity, but scratch a specific itch in a specific type of person that watches them anyway. […]

All the Feels (Spoiler Alert, #2) by Olivia Dade

December 21, 2021 by narfna 4 Comments

Two weeks later, still swooning on my fainting couch over this one. It definitely hit me in my swooners. I want to be friends with Lauren, and I want to hug Alex, and I love them together so, so much. I did end up rounding down, though, for a couple of reasons. But first, the positives. This is a direct companion to the first book, Spoiler Alert. You get a lot more context for Alex’s actions in that book, and a key climactic scene there is […]

This really wasn’t as bad as I’d heard it would be!

Magic Bites (Kate Daniels, #1) by Ilona Andrews

October 1, 2021 by narfna 4 Comments

I liked this, but it was the least well put together of the books I’ve read from these authors yet. I would have continued on anyway, but I’m glad for the heads up everyone has given me that this series improves. Mostly, I’m fed up with the alpha dick measuring that Curran and his pack have going on. I find it very irritating and I hope he knocks it off. So this is the first book in the much beloved Kate Daniels urban fantasy series, […]

The best book in this series so far.

The Devil Comes Courting (The Worth Saga, #4) by Courtney Milan

July 9, 2021 by narfna Leave a Comment

**30 Books in 30 Days** Book 19/30 The wait was incredibly worth it on this one. We waited years, and this is by far the best full novel in this series (the novella The Pursuit Of . . . is wonderful, too). First of all, according to the author’s notes of this book, Courtney Milan is literally the reason there is a dinosaur emoji. Second of all, she actually created the Chinese telegraphic code in the book (the theory of it, anyway). Like, whAt? (Those […]

Alex irrationally hates any song with a saxophone in it. That’s the level of beautiful detail you get here. #CBRBINGO – Travel

People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry

July 8, 2021 by narfna Leave a Comment

**30 Books in 30 Days** Book 14/30 Objectively, this book deserves five stars. It is impeccably put together. It is funny. It is detailed. It has such well-developed characters. Impeccable use of theme. And all the lovely, small details she uses make it so immersive! I really liked it a lot. Would recommend to anyone. But I have a special place in my heart for her previous adult offering, Beach Read, and this didn’t quite reach that level for me where it’s basically like, I […]

Isn't It Bromantic? (Bromance Book Club, #4) by Lyssa Kay Adams

July 7, 2021 by narfna 2 Comments

**30 Books in 30 Days** Book 8/30 Thanks to Netgalley and Berkley for the ARC. It hasn’t affected the content of my review. For the first like 15% of this book, I was giddy with how much I was enjoying it. I was like YES THIS BOOK and highlighting stuff and writing notes. Then the shine wore off a little. And then there were some bits at the end that made me roll my eyes. So overall, this was an average reading experience, with some […]
