An Affair to Forget

A Summer Affair by Elin Hildebrand

March 29, 2022 by Lynn Leave a Comment

I like Elin Hildebrand because she writes stories set on Nantucket, and it makes me feel like I can hear the ocean and smell the salt and the flowers and feel the sand between my toes. I live in on the west coast of Florida, where the beach is 9,327 degrees and the sand gives you second degree burns on the bottom of your feet and it sometimes smells like red tide. Don’t get me wrong; I like the beach, but the Nantucket beach feels […]

I see dead people? I think?

Comfort & Joy: A Fable by Kristin Hannah

March 2, 2022 by Lynn 17 Comments

What did I just read? So I confess that I didn’t really read the blurb that closely, just saw Kristin Hannah, knew that I liked (and had downloaded) other stuff from her, and just needed something quickly because I had scores of doctor’s appointments and waiting rooms coming up. But this was weird. Like, SUPER weird. Joy – a high school librarian – is a lover of all things Christmas, but this year, her first Christmas since her divorce (where her husband left her for […]

Will you accept this…shoe?

If the Shoe Fits by Julie Murphy

February 9, 2022 by Lynn 1 Comment

A few years ago, I discovered Julie Murphy by way of Dumplin’, which made the rounds around CBR and if I remember right, everyone pretty much loved it. If the Shoe Fits is cute – not as awesome as Dumplin’ – but still an interesting retelling of Cinderella, only without the wicked stepmother and stepsisters. (They’re much nicer in this version.) Cindy is a recent graduate of Parson’s School of Design, but she feels a bit adrift and not particularly inspired after graduation. She returns […]

Susan, can you write better romantic heroes, please?

When Stars Collide by Susan Elizabeth Phillips

February 8, 2022 by Lynn 1 Comment

Sometimes I like Susan Elizabeth Phillips, and sometimes I don’t. Like, I REALLY don’t. Susan’s back with the Chicago Stars, the fictional NFL team she likes to write about. This time, Olivia, a famous soprano who performs arias all over the world, is thrown together with Tad Owns, a member of the Stars, to embark on an international tour to sell $3,000 watches. Much is made of Olivia’s penchant for overpacking, her prim and proper appearance, and her loathing of Tad. (Which is mentioned in […]

Get rid of Ryan and keep the dog

Talk Bookish To Me by Kate Bromley

February 8, 2022 by Lynn 4 Comments

This… was not awesome. I mean, I guess it was okay, and I skimmed it over the course of a couple of days during a lovely bought of “awake-at-3am-itis,” but… well, let’s just say it was told in first person present, which I absolutely LOATHE. Kara’s best friend – whose name escapes me at the moment – is getting married next week. At the “pre-wedding party”, Kara discovers that one of the groomsmen is actually her first love, Ryan, the guy who broke her heart […]

Match.com meets Theranos but with less nefariousness and more (maybe? I don’t know) sex

The Soulmate Equation by Christina Lauren

February 8, 2022 by Lynn 2 Comments

Last year (I think it was last year?), I read a book by Christina Lauren that involved the two romantic leads being the only two characters in the story who didn’t participate in the opening scene’s vomit-mania. It was actually pretty decent, despite the mass puking, and I knew the name sounded familiar when I downloaded The Soulmate Equation from the library, but I didn’t connect the two until I went to write my review. I’m not sure what the point here is, other than […]
