I bet Lydia Kang is a lot of fun at parties

A Beautiful Poison by Lydia Kang

April 18, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

Lydia Kang wrote one of my favorite recent reads, Quackery: A Brief History of the Worst Ways to Cure Everything. So when a novel by her popped up in my Overdrive recommendations after I finished a nonfiction book on the Spanish flu, I immediately borrowed it. This woman knows a LOT about poisons, murders, and the Gilded Age. Also, she looks like this: And I totally want to be her friend. Anyway, A Beautiful Poison is set in new York during the Spanish flu, but […]

Blowing smoke up your ass used to be literal

Quackery: A Brief History of the Worst Ways to Cure Everything by Lydia Kang and Nate Pedersen

Quackery: A Brief History of the Worst Ways to Cure Everything reminded me a lot of Jennifer Wright’s Get Well Soon; they both tackle the history of early medicine and make you happy to live in the modern age. Quackery is brief, each chapter is essentially an extra long Cracked article, but Kang provides a lot of information in a short amount of time and if any topic really intrigues you it would probably be easy to discover a more in depth article on the Internet. Sure, we all know […]

Quackery: A Brief History of the Worst Ways to Cure Everything by Lydia Kang, Nate Pedersen

Y’all, crystalclear posted a review of Quackery: A Brief History of the Worst Ways to Cure Everything back in November and I immediately put it on hold at the library. It was everything I could have possibly wanted: weird medical facts, crazy pictures and graphics, and a wicked sense of humor. Thank you crystalclear – I will be amazed if this one doesn’t make my top 3 list 11 months from now! Okay, so the authors break the book into a few different sections. Each section covers all of […]

And not a duck to be seen!

Quackery: A Brief History on the Worst Ways to Cure Everything is indeed what it says on the box.  We have an intro into what each method is, and then how awful it was and why.  It’s very informative, but for each thing it comes across as a Very Big Deal. Each of these methods were indeed used, but it seems like the authors over-inflate their importance.      Mercury (I’m sure everyone knows by now that medically, Mercury is a Very Bad Thing) Antimony […]
