A Layer Cake of a Book

Battle Royal by Lucy Parker

May 7, 2021 by Emmalita 5 Comments

I love this layer  cake of a book. I planned to read my 6 other advance reader copies that will all be published in May before I tackled Battle Royal, but I have very little impulse control and Lucy Parker is my catnip. I read it in one day and then I was going to wait to review it, but here we are. I recommend having access to the confections of your choice (boozy confections would be appropriate, unless they wouldn’t) and a couple of […]

Casting couch jokes land a bit differently these days

Pretty Face by Lucy Parker

March 29, 2021 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

I’d actually have rated this slightly lower if I could have, but as is the usual in reviews 2* seems horrific, and I’m well aware that my issues are specific to me and things that I tend to dislike. That thing being mismatched power dynamics, whether in the sense of age (much older man to a younger woman), power (boss/employee, teacher/student), etc. As you can imagine, this book–which has both the age and career issues–was always going to be an uphill battle. At the end […]

A fun hate-to-love romance

Headliners by Lucy Parker

December 10, 2020 by Sophia Leave a Comment

I discovered Lucy Parker through a Cannonball review. The first book of hers I read was Act Like It, which I loved, and I’ve read all of Parker’s books ever since. I enjoyed this book, although I still think my favorite Parker book was her first. I’m finding that I enjoy these in the moment but forget them relatively quickly once I’m done. Headliners (2020) occurs in the same world as Parker’s West End theater books, and the story continues with characters we’ve already met. In fact, it […]

Enemy coworkers fall in love, on TV.

Headliners (London Celebrities, #5) by Lucy Parker

This wasn’t my favorite of Lucy Parker’s books, but I still liked it. I don’t think I could ever not like one of her books. Maybe it’s just my headspace right now, but I never connected with either Sabrina or Nick, and what was happening to them felt very far away from me emotionally. I also felt the book relied too much on the events of the previous book, and if I hadn’t read that one, it would have not had as much of an […]

Lucy Parker Delivers (and with a romantic pairing that don’t want kids to boot!)

Headliners (London Celebrities #5) by Lucy Parker

February 12, 2020 by faintingviolet 3 Comments

I love Lucy Parker, it’s as simple as that. I love the kind of book she writes; I love the world she has built in this series and the characters she chooses to populate it with. I’m rating this one five stars, as I did with its immediate predecessor The Austen Playbook mostly because of how it made me feel while I was reading it. That isn’t to say that Parker isn’t using her craft well – she absolutely is – but that craft sunk […]

Yay for grown-up romance!

Headliners (London Celebrities #5) by Lucy Parker

January 21, 2020 by J 4 Comments

At their worst, the two of them could do a cracker impression of circling warplanes. She came in as the Spitfire, all weapons blazing; Nick was the Avro Lancaster, biding his time and then suddenly dropping the high-damage bombs. Former late night news rivals Sabrina Carlton and Nick Davenport are both in the doghouse. Sabrina is still dealing with the scandal exposed (by Nick!) in The Austen Playbook. Nick was caught on camera saying unflattering things about the boss. Their last chance to stay on […]
