I Do Love a Punny Title

August 23, 2016 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

I don’t know why I hadn’t thought of food memoirs as their own thing. I’ve read a few, and I have a whole shelf on my Goodreads labeled “food related”, but I just never quite made the connection until Book Riot’s Read Harder Challenge included reading one and I had no trouble at all picking a couple to put on my to read list (most were there already). Cannonball Read loves Lucy Knisley, so I decided to start with hers. Because graphic memoirs and novels […]

Yet another great book from Knisley

August 21, 2016 by yesknopemaybe 2 Comments

Cannonball favorite Lucy Knisley just came out with a new book so of course I had to get my hands on it. Her books are always a high point in my reading life. Getting married was never something Knisley had planned for or looked forward to, so she felt like a fish out of water during much of the planning process. Something New is the story of how she and her now husband tackled their momentous wedding day and the years leading up to it. […]

To your union, and the hope that you provide

July 7, 2016 by baxlala 2 Comments

Remember on Sex and the City (yeah, that’s right) when Carrie and Miranda try on wedding dresses, just for shits and giggles, and Carrie has a panic attack? That’s exactly how I felt about trying on wedding dresses, not because I didn’t want to marry my fiance (like Carrie) but because I already hate shopping AND trying on clothes. The thought of trying on wedding dresses in front of other people made my skin crawl. I just wanted something comfortable, something non-strapless, and a dress […]

I’ve been in Paris meeting lots of different ladies

July 5, 2016 by baxlala 4 Comments

I’ve read Lucy Knisley’s books mostly out of order. I started with her more recent and worked my way around. Not on purpose, but sometimes that’s just how reading goes, you know? I first discovered Knisley’s work via her webcomic and loved it because she loved, and drew about, so many of the things I loved: cats, books, Harry Potter, food. She was also navigating some of the same things I was, namely How to Adult and everything that went with it. I was also […]

Knisley is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors

July 3, 2016 by yesknopemaybe 1 Comment

3.5 stars. This is my third Knisley graphic memoir (and I have Something New and French Milk on my nightstand). An Age of License was perfectly enjoyable, but after the surprise and delight of Relish and near perfection of Displacement, it pales a bit in comparison. I have a sneaking suspicion it might have hit me with more impact if I had read it just a few years ago when I was younger and dealing with the same kinds growing pains. Like Displacement, this is […]

My first graphic [novel] travelogue

June 12, 2016 by Sophia Leave a Comment

I first heard of Displacement (2015) by Lucy Knisley from another Cannonball review. Knisley is a twenty-something writer who volunteers to chaperone her aging grandparents when they unexpectedly sign up for a cruise. I’d never read a graphic novel [or travelogue] before, but this one called to me for a number of reasons. First, the review was very positive and persuasive. Second, I have never been on a cruise, and I’m pretty sure that’s been a good decision. Right now, most of my knowledge of cruises […]
