Toxic Friendships That Lead to Murder

The Hunting Party by Lucy Foley

July 28, 2022 by teresaelectro Leave a Comment

CBR Bingo: Snakes The Hunting Party by Lucy Foley was the December 2021 Mocha Girls Read book club selection. The theme was “snow on the cover”. I’ve heard a bunch of hype around this book. I am also a sucker for a cozy mystery or a thriller tv show. So I was more than a little intrigued. Everyone is a suspect so this works rather nicely for the “Snakes” square. We meet a group of friends who went to Oxford together and are stuck in […]

Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous

The Hunting Party by Lucy Foley

The Guest List by Lucy Foley

March 19, 2022 by Zirza Leave a Comment

Imagine this: you and your friends go on a celebratory weekend holiday to a luxurious yet remote retreat. You all go way back: to university, to secondary school, perhaps even before that. Yet inevitably your lives have drifted apart since then. You’ve all grown up, you’ve all changed, which makes it all the more awkward when everyone tries and fails to fit back into the roles you used to occupy. Maybe your dowdy best friend is now more successful than you, and you try not […]

Foley Double Feature – Two books for the plot of one!

The Guest List by Lucy Foley

The Hunting Party by Lucy Foley

February 9, 2022 by Claudia 3 Comments

My library decided to drop these holds on me a week apart even though they were expected WEEKS apart so I ended up getting both right after the other. I do not think Foley is for me after both these middle ground books. The Guest List I don’t think this book is necessarily bad, but I am not quite so sure why its so popular either. The Guest List is not your typical mystery/thriller, while we know that SOMETHING happens in the future what we […]

It’s like fantasy island, but everyone’s the worst

The Guest List by Lucy Foley

January 29, 2022 by donttrustthe_bea 9 Comments

Written in the vein of Big Little Lies meets Agatha Christie, the novel is set on an island in West Ireland. We are first introduced to Aoife (pronounced Ee-Fah) and her husband Freddy, a couple that owns a newly opened beach front destination getaway on the island. They are preparing to host the wedding of Jules, a well known online magazine editor, and Will, a popular survival reality star. This is the first big event the couple is hosting, and they hope the media coverage […]

Books for Spooky Season

The Last Book on the Left by Marcus Parks, et al

Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

The Guest List by Lucy Foley

December 1, 2021 by Leslie 4 Comments

As a fan of Last Podcast on the Left, I both looked forward to reading the book by “The Boys” (Marcus Parks, Ben Kissel, and Henry Zebrowski) and also wondered how they would pull it off. The podcast is irreverent and explicit, with Parks (usually) providing the research and central narrative of a particular topic, while Ben and Henry offer asides and impressions. The good (?) news is that The Last Book on the Left essentially replicates that structure. Each chapter provides information on a serial killer (ten […]

The bog is a metaphor.

The Guest List by Lucy Foley

The reviews on this one were mixed, so I really wasn’t sure what to think. And anyway, I got it for free from Book of the Month since it was literally the only Book of the Year nominee I hadn’t read yet, and it’s a short read, so if it was sucky not really much of anything lost. And I definitely didn’t think it was sucky! It was an entertaining read. Most of the characters were despicable and detestable (except Olivia and Hannah, basically), but […]
