Unlikable Characters Doing Inexplicable Things

Tell Me Who You Are by Louisa Luna

October 20, 2024 by Ellesfena Leave a Comment

The story: Dr. Caroline Strange is a psychiatrist in Brooklyn. She has a very inflated sense of self-worth, believing she knows what’s best for everyone, and gives all of her patients cutesy, cringy, cruel nicknames like Tawdry Twyla and Weepy Jasmine. One morning a new patient arrives, tells her, “I’m going to kill someone, and I know who you really are,” and walks out. This sets off twin storylines, narrated by three different characters–1) Caroline in the present, trying to figure out who this guy […]

Ok I Will

Tell Me Who You Are by Louisa Luna

July 26, 2024 by Jake Leave a Comment

Read as part of CBR16 Bingo: free space. Ok I will get to my thoughts about this book in a second. But… It’s probably been talked about before by folks in other spaces but I find it notable that so many female-written thrillers are based around a woman running away from her past. Could be because of an abusive ex or parents but it is often — as it is here — about a traumatic event that occurred when they were younger. I’m not trying […]

A Pretty Solid Series

Hideout by Louisa Luna

July 16, 2022 by Ellesfena 5 Comments

Bingo: Elephant (the elephant in the room being the white supremacist group that the townsfolk and police department of Ilona, OR, are desperately pretending aren’t there) This is the third Alice Vega mystery, and while it’s probably my least favorite so far, it’s still pretty good. Alice Vega and her sometimes partner, Max “Cap” Caplan, set out to solve the mystery of what happened to a college football player who disappeared mid-game–by running out of the stadium while still carrying the ball. The search leads […]

Tense and Suspenseful

The Janes by Louisa Luna

October 9, 2021 by Ellesfena Leave a Comment

CBR Bingo: Landscape My whole plan this year of picking up series I’d abandoned kind of got, well, abandoned when Bingo started, but I was glad I found a square for this series as I enjoyed the first book quite a bit. Series: Alice Vega. This is Book #2, I read (and reviewed) Book #1 in 2020. What I remembered about this series prior to reading this book: I remembered the two main characters, Alice Vega (the no-nonsense, prone to explosive violence PI) and Max […]

The Beginning of a Beautiful Friendship?

Two Girls Down by Louisa Luna

May 17, 2020 by Ellesfena Leave a Comment

There are so many mystery series with a similar premise to Two Girls Down: Hardbitten private investigator teams up with disgraced former cop (also a PI) to solve a case the police can’t. That’s not to say I didn’t like Two Girls Down, because I did. This is mostly due to the two main characters, Alice Vega (hardbitten PI) and Max “Cap” Caplan (former cop). Alice is the kind of character who’s fun to read about, because she’s unpredictable (and a total badass). I liked […]
