Thoughts on Lord of Scoundrels

March 27, 2017 by faintingviolet 5 Comments

This friends, is why you review books right away. Because I don’t really remember a darn thing about this audio book I finished it last Monday. You see, I’ve been packing, and moving, and generally trying to survive work. While not the best time to try to read and review, let’s see if I can’t give this book a fair shake. Overall impressions: it was good. I cranked up the audio speed though because the narrator was a bit laconic in her delivery, but her […]

A historical romance with a murder investigation and lots of angst

March 26, 2017 by Malin 3 Comments

Leila Beaumont is a beautiful and very talented portrait artist, as celebrated throughout Europe as her husband, Francis, is becoming reviled. While Leila is aware of Francis adultery, his tendency to drink and take drugs to excess, she is unaware that he also ran a brothel in Paris and tended to make money through the blackmail of prominent members of society. While she hasn’t allowed him in her bed for years, Leila is nonetheless grateful to Francis for rescuing her when she was orphaned in […]

“We’re of one mind, Grenville and I, and the mind is hers, on account of my being a man and not having one.”

March 12, 2017 by Malin 6 Comments

Another re-read of one of my all-time favourites, once again narrated by the excellent Kate Reading. Vere Mallory becomes the Duke of Ainswood after pretty much every other male in his family line dies, including several family members he cared deeply for, and he’s quite happy to drink and debauch himself into an early grave so the accursed title can’t take anyone else, thank you very much. An endless existence of carousing gets tedious after a while, though, and once he crosses paths with Miss […]

A historical romance with hieroglyphs, adventure and a mongoose named Marigold

March 5, 2017 by Malin 7 Comments

Rupert Carsington is the fourth son of the Earl of Hargate and has been sent to Egypt to get out of the way of all the calamities he’s been able to get tangled in at home in England and on the continent. He finds himself locked up in a dungeon jail after seeing a bunch of soldiers beat up a beggar in the street and deciding to defend the man, beating up a horde of soldiers as a result. His bail is paid by Mrs […]

Not injured, Sir? No swooning? No tears? Excellent

January 26, 2017 by Emmalita 10 Comments

I bought Dukes Prefer Blondes a while ago after hearing positive chatter amongst Cannonballers, and then, as I do, I became resistant. I finally got over it when Mrs. Julien published her Favorite Romance Couples list. Firstly, Mrs. Julien is correct. Oliver and Clara are a wonderful couple. They argue and bicker, often with logic. Clara has a wonderful habit of turning Oliver’s words back on him. Oliver is surprised to find an aristocratic woman with a brain. Clara is dying on the inside, bored […]

Be Who You Are, Marry Who You Want – Historical Romance Edition

January 6, 2017 by faintingviolet 1 Comment

Here we are again lovelies. It’s the beginning of another Cannonball Read and I am telling you about a romance novel that I enjoyed and picked up based on the suggestions of other cannonballers. It’s the system at its finest, really. We almost read this one for Book Club last year, and part of me wishes we had, and another part of me thinks this one would have been a little too tropey as well. And I say that knowing full well that it ended up on Mrs. Julien’s best […]
