Hugh Ancaster, seventh Duke of Ripley, is well-known in society (or possibly rather infamous) as one of the three dis-graces. He has returned from an extended trip to the continent just in time for his fellow dis-graces stag do. His best friend, the angel-faced Duke of Ashmont, has managed to find a bride and one from a respectable and upstanding family at that. Lady Olympia Hightower, only daughter of the Earl of Gonerby, is the lucky lady. Although she seems to be having second thoughts, […]
Canals and Lust on the Derbyshire Moors
This was a good weekend for finding books on my Kindle. Malin and Mrs. Julien have done the lord’s work in convincing me to move past whatever reluctance I had about reading Loretta Chase. Miss Wonderful is my third Chase this year. I must say, she writes a great heroine and some excellent banter. Alistair Carsington is the third of five sons. His father has announced Alistair must find a way to support himself, or marry an heiress, within 6 months because he is expensive to […]
“Spunky English girl overcomes impossible odds and outsmarts heathen villains”
After being disappointed with the latest historical romances I’ve read, I decided to reread some old Loretta Chase books. I’ve never been disappointed with her books, and this is one of my favorites. It’s book two in the Fallen Women series, where Ms Chase gives unconventional heroines their HEA. Zoe Octavia Lexham was known as a bolter when she was child. She continually ran away and only Lucien de Grey, a ward of her father’s, was able to find her. Unfortunately, Lucien wasn’t with them […]
Let Us Now Praise Jessica Trent
On the recommendation of Malin and Mrs. Julien, I picked up Lord of Scoundrels over a year ago. I had a hard time getting past the prologue. Finally, with permission from Our Ladies of the Kissing Books, I skipped the prologue and a chunk of the first chapter. I was going through a reviewing slump when I read the book, so, um, it’s been a while. Here is faintingviolet‘s review. Somehow I shall endeavor to say different things, but this is what I would have […]
Yeah, I needed to upgrade the rating for this a bit
4.5 stars My first review of this book can be found here. It was the very first book I read in 2016 and having revisited it, I have decided that I may in fact have overly strict with my rating of it. Since I already recounted the plot and gave a thorough analysis for my feelings about the book there, that’s the place to go if you’re curious about what the book is about. This review will be more about my re-read and the audio […]
Strangers in the Night
This is an older Loretta Chase that I hadn’t read until I was intrigued by Malin’s recent review. To be honest, I’m not sure if I liked it as much as the books that follow this. It’s quite a change from Lord of Scoundrels, to be sure. There were parts of it that I found tedious, and I almost quit reading a few times. I persevered, and while this didn’t become a favorite of mine, I can see the characters growth and the complex nature of their relationship. […]
