That’s right, the five star club has a new member

The Last Hellion by Loretta Chase

April 3, 2021 by wicherwill 2 Comments

A recommendation by Malin! Yeah okay I debated whether to give this a four star or a five star review and then thought SCREW IT. I really, really enjoyed this one. Every time I was ready to be disappointed by the next plot turn, with the inevitable meeting of my modern day sensibilities with the realities of 1800s England gentry, Chase surprised me with time-appropriate plot resolutions that made my little romance novel loving heart sing. In glancing through some of the less-than-glowing reviews, people seemed […]

Love In the Time of Canals

Your Scandalous Ways by Loretta Chase

Hmm something about this didn’t click the same way that Lord of Scoundrels clicked. I figure a decent chunk of that is that no character can compare to Jessica (I felt somewhat similar with every heroine of Georgette Heyer, sometimes anti-semite, after Sophy). I picked it up in a similar vein to others, it seems–a heroine who isn’t a blushing virgin set across from a notorious ladies’ man who teaches her glorious pleasure. Like, sure, won’t deny I read the f out of those books but also, […]

Beauty and the Beast, Now with 100% Less Stockholm

Lord of Scoundrels by Loretta Chase

March 18, 2021 by wicherwill 8 Comments

I’ll say that this is probably more of a 2.5 book that I am rounding up because I liked it but also kept wincing until near to the end (if not the end), which is not a reaction I want to have with these types of books. I believe this was a Beauty and the Beast retelling I stumbled upon after reading When Beauty Tamed the Beast and deciding that this would be a vein I’d pursue in some more detail. If it weren’t for the fact […]

“Nobody had told them to say the fair was not at home.”

Ten Things I Hate About the Duke by Loretta Chase

February 15, 2021 by Nart 4 Comments

If you love The Big Grovel, this is your book. Because it is ALL grovel. Spectacular, well done grovel. Loretta Chase is a titan in romance and for good reason. Even in the ’90s, she was writing romance with men that weren’t rapists and women with a personality more complex than “gentle and sweet”. It seems like one of her favourite tropes is the himbo and the sharp tongued, intensely smart woman with zero fucks that the himbo just wants to support while she tears […]

Continuing My Tradition of Starting the Cannonball Year with a Romance

Ten Things I Hate About the Duke by Loretta Chase

January 1, 2021 by faintingviolet 3 Comments

Ten Things I Hate About the Duke is the second book in Loretta Chase’s Difficult Dukes series. Much like A Duke in Shining Armor, we’re dropped into action already in progress, but this time much of that action is the events at the tail end of the first book in the series. I read A Duke in Shining Armor in February of 2018 and while you don’t need to revisit the first to enjoy the second, part of me wishes I had. The three-year delay […]

Another Loretta Chase novel pairing a big, strong lug and a clever, opinionated woman. Hey, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Ten Things I Hate About the Duke by Loretta Chase

December 28, 2020 by Malin 2 Comments

Official book description: Cassandra Pomfret holds strong opinions she isn’t shy about voicing. But her extremely plain speaking has caused an uproar, and her exasperated father, hoping a husband will rein her in, has ruled that her beloved sister can’t marry until Cassandra does.   Now, thanks to a certain wild-living nobleman, the last shreds of Cassandra’s reputation are about to disintegrate, taking her sister’s future and her family’s good name along with them.   The Duke of Ashmont’s looks make women swoon. His character […]
