This is a book that I read.

Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry

November 20, 2025 by Ellesfena Leave a Comment

I remember watching Lonesome Dove with my grandparents as a child, although I remember absolutely nothing about the plot (I was probably not actually watching, but reading something while it was on in the background). What I remember most is how much my grandparents liked it. A couple years ago I decided maybe I’d try to read the book. I stopped and started at least 3 times, struggling to have any interest in the lives of a couple retired Texas Rangers. It wasn’t until this year, when […]

This book tied everything together perfectly

Comanche Moon by Larry McMurtry

I started this book soon after finishing Dead Man’s Walk back in June. I stalled about 100 pages in, and kind of stopped reading.  I didn’t even remember The Vegetarian by Han Kang until my wife asked me about it after hearing that she was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature. Han Kang, that is, not my wife (though, I would totally award my wife a Nobel Prize). Anyway. I talked a co-worker of mine into reading Lonesome Dove a few months ago, and he’s […]

An elegiac paean that didn’t convey what it’s author wanted

Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry

In 1981, Bruce Springsteen was in talks with Paul Schrader to star in a musical that would, six years later, become Light of Day, and starred Michael J. Fox in one of his first non-comedic roles. The film was originally titled Born in the U.S.A., which Springsteen would use to title a song he’d been working on about a Vietnam veteran. After going through several home demo permutations, it would eventually be the center-point for his 1984 multi-platinum album of the same name, and helped […]

I doubt it matters where you die, but it matters where you live.

So, you have to understand that Lonesome Dove has been in the background of my life for a long time. Not the story, exactly, just the existence of the book. They filmed the Return to Lonesome Dove miniseries very close from my grandfather’s ranch, on what was the remains of my great-uncle’s ranch before it was turned into 20 acre housing lots. (If there is more apt metaphor for Lonesome Dove, I don’t what it would be). So the existence of the novel has been […]

A Harsh View of the West, Unblemished by Romanticism

March 28, 2018 by Jen K 1 Comment

I have been vaguely intending to read this novel for quite a while but I always ended up prioritizing other books, especially since I didn’t actually already have it in my TBR pile.  I’ve noticed a few Cannonballers mention the Bookriot Read Harder Challenge and since I’d already read a few books that fit into the various categories, I thought it might be fun to participate, and it also provided a push to finally pick up Lonesome Dove to meet the Western requirement. I was, […]
