Experiencing an identity crisis and burnout on your parents’ couch while a hot, single, emotionally-unavailable guy sleeps down the hall

Georgie All Along by Kate Clayborn

August 29, 2025 by carmelpie Leave a Comment

I perform the task of exhausted women everywhere—taking my bra off without removing my top. Once I’ve pulled it through the armhole of my tank, I fling it onto the old, slouchy couch, sending it the disgusted glare that all bras deserve after a long, hot day. ― Kate Clayborn, Georgie, All Along CBR17 Bingo: G This is the book I’ve most recently finished. While I try to follow the order in which I read books, my “to review” list has become so daunting that […]

Teen Killers Club (volume one) by Lily Sparks

December 6, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Both predictable and a few surprises, Teen Killers Club (volume one) has a few bumps and bruises and some killings. Okay, a lot of killing. The overall of this novel I enjoyed, however, there were several parts I did not. The biggest two were Signal (our innocent member of this summer camp from heck) is a major Damsel in Distress and she thinks she can change people just by loving them. Even murderers who really like their “hobby.”  There are several heavy-handed plot points, some […]

“The Mad Scene. Enter Ophelia!”

Ophelia by Charlotte Gingras

May 8, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The only way I can describe this book is: I absolutely hated everything about it AND loved it. Charlotte Gingras brings out emotions of love, hate, disgust and so much more in this translation (by Christelle Morelli and Susan Ouriou) of her book, Ophelia. Sometimes I was rooting for Ophelia and other times I just wanted to smack her. Hard. I felt for her and the difficulties she was going through. I felt she was the most selfish creature on the face of the planet. […]

The Stars Never Disappear

July 30, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

In Sight of Stars by Gae Polisner took a bit for me to get through. Mostly because it deals with some very tough subjects: depression, suicide, family and love. Filled with many great observations there are some clichés as well. These can be overlooked due to the nature of the story. These also help break up the tension of a typically over dramatic teenager mentality. (Spoiler) The clues are there as to why the father commits suicide, why the mother is the way she is, […]
