Utterly bleak and black is not the sum of realism. All the other colors are real, too.

The Hallowed Hunt by Lois McMaster Bujold

October 4, 2019 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

This is the third published, but earliest chronological novel in the World of the Five Gods/Chalion series by Lois McMaster Bujold. In it, a crowned prince has just been found dead, bludgeoned by his own war hammer, and the Lady Ijada is the only likely culprit. She claims self-defense, but her seemingly willingness to go to the prince is being used against her. We meet her now en route, with the prince’s body, with noble/captain Ingrey who has been charged with bringing both for an […]

This last was delivered in a fairy tale singsong.

The Flowers of Vashnoi by Lois McMaster Bujold

This short novella takes places after Cryoburn and before Capt. Vorpatril’s Alliance. We have Ekaterin and Enrique going back to their bugs, this time working with bugs designed to eradicate radiation in nuclear zones. These bugs glow, and they have attracted thieves both stealing the bugs, but more importantly walking among and spreading the radiation the bugs are designed to target. So they have to investigate. I like and have always liked the Lois McMaster Bujold novellas. But one things I’ve noticed is that they […]

Patience for her vengeance dripped like vitriol from her voice

The Spirit Ring by Lois McMaster Bujold

August 23, 2019 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

This is a one-off fantasy novel by Lois McMaster Bujold that she wrote a decade of so before The Curse of Chalion really thrust her into the fantasy world of publishing. It’s strong in some ways — the kind of humor we’ve come to expect, the creation of characters, the action sequences, and a sense that magic has to be chained to the nature world in understandable ways (as opposed to the kind of Wishing for More Wishes of Harry Potter’s charms and hexes). There’s […]

I am so lost.

Cryoburn by Lois McMaster Bujold

August 17, 2019 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

The most recent and I think perhaps last Miles Vorkosigan novel. Miles, now 35 or thereabouts is on an outer planet whose main economy is cryogenics investigating a rash of recent economic moves by factions from Komarr. While doing so, he is stunned into oblivion and we actually begin the novel in his consciousness, which is completely frazzled, having hallucinations, and chucked into the underworld looking for clues. He’s able to stumble onto a group of somewhat rogue cryoworkers who not only is able to […]

“And still ducking promotion, Captain Vorpatril?”

Captain Vorpatril's Alliance by Lois McMaster Bujold

August 15, 2019 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

This is probably my second favorite novel in the whole series and it was the first one I’d ever heard about. It came out in 2013 and was listed in a Buzzfeed preview list and the enthusiasm of the review made me really interested in the series. It’s funny too because the novel is a departure from most of the rest of the books. Here we have Miles’s cousin Ivan Vorpatrail, familiar to regular readers in his ancillary role. Ivan is a foil to Miles […]

This galactic honeymoon was delayed, but perhaps better so.

Diplomatic Immunity by Lois McMaster Bujold

August 5, 2019 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

Another detective novel! Miles and Ekaterin, now married, are on their honeymoon, somewhere, when Miles gets waylaid in capacity as imperial auditor in order to investigate a possible murder, the detention of Barayaran ships and spacers, and a fraught diplomatic situation. Ekaterin, realizing this is her life now, joins the fun along with their two developing children, currently incubating in uterine replicators. The mission brings them to “Quaddie space”. This novel ties together a 20 year old novel that Bujold wrote early in her career […]
