I don’t want power. I just object to idiots having power over me.

Shards of Honor by Lois McMaster Bujold

Barrayar by Lois McMaster Bujold

The Warrior's Apprentice by Lois McMaster Bujold

June 27, 2023 by carmelpie 4 Comments

I was so afraid for you, I forgot to be afraid for your enemies. ― Lois McMaster Bujold, Barrayar These three novels were my entry into the Vorkosigan books by Lois McMaster Bujold. There are a few different entry points, but these three provided the right amount of backstory at the right time. I’ve read that you can begin with The Warrior’s Apprentice, however you would miss out on some wonderful characters that are only referenced within the two earlier books. Shards of Honor is […]

Maybe next time I skip the omnibus version

Miles Errant by Lois McMaster Bujold

June 23, 2023 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

There should be a content warning for the Mirror Dance section of Miles Errant; there were some mildly graphic descriptions of highly unpleasant things, mostly torture. I’m also learning that maybe the omnibus editions aren’t the best idea, at least for me. “The Borders of Infinity” doesn’t really fit narrative-wise with the other two novel/las (Brothers in Arms and Mirror Dance) even if they are apparently chronologically in order. Overall, for all three stories, there are some things of interest, but almost as many problems […]

“We have advanced to new and surprising levels of bafflement”

Komarr by Lois McMaster Bujold

May 24, 2023 by Bothari43 6 Comments

Is there anything better than introducing a beloved/book/series to a dear friend, and having them enjoy it as much as you do?  A friend finally finished all 900 Wheel of Time books, and asked me about the Vorkosigan saga, which he knows is my favorite. I gave him an enthusiastic nutshell overview, and about three different suggestions for where to dive in. (The internet told him to start chronologically, with Falling Free – bah!) He started with Shards of Honor, and loved Cordelia as much […]

The five purposes of prayer were taught to be service, supplication, gratitude, divination, and atonement, and it was gratitude Penric chose now.

Knot of Shadows by Lois McMaster Bujold

I’ve enjoyed the Penric and Desdemona series enormously over the past 3 weeks. I will circle back around and review the installments I have not yet reviewed in the new year. I raced through the last 6 and they certainly deserve a reread. I think my favorite thing about the series is that it is in many ways an investigative procedural – Pen and Des investigate things and get in and out of situations without there being an over-arching antagonist or a need to save […]

Finally visiting the World of the 5 Gods

Penric’s Demon by Lois McMaster Bujold

Penric and the Shaman by Lois McMaster Bujold

Penric’s Fox by Lois McMaster Bujold

December 6, 2022 by Emmalita 2 Comments

Bothari43 has been singing the praises of Lois McMaster Bujold for some time and she, and a couple of other people, have given me various Bujold books, which I have not read. I don’t know why. I believe Bothari43 when she tells me I will like the books, but some part of me, I don’t know, hates joy? I become overwhelmed with anxiety that I will fail people by not loving the books as much as they do? Anyway, I finally bit the bullet, sort […]

Give Me a Happy Ending Every TIme

Prisoner on Limnos by Lois McMaster Bujold

August 28, 2022 by sabian30 1 Comment

This book concludes the Penric/Desdemona novella series and ends as expected but wraps everything up in a very satisfactory manner. Not only do we have the ongoing story of Penric and his unrequited love for Nikys becoming requited, but we also have him broaching an impregnable fortress to save his potential mother-in-law. In Orbas, Ny’s brother, Adelis, has gone off to fight a war for his new lord, leaving Nikys as a lady-in-waiting and poor Penric packing to return to his homeland as ordered by […]
