“I was more afraid of the truth than the lie. The truth would change the circumstances of my life. The lie was static. The lie was peaceful. I was happy with the lie.”

Long Bright River by Liz Moore

It’s always an interesting time when authors who write literary fiction decide to play in genre sandboxes (note: literary fiction is also a genre, and not one with more merit than any other, just so we’re clear on my position here). The Unseen World, the author’s previous book, is one of my favorite books I’ve read in the last several years. I liked it so much that I put all of the author’s published work on my TBR (which I have of course since ignored). […]

“There’s a body on the Gurney Street tracks.”

Long Bright River by Liz Moore

January 1, 2020 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

This is the fourth novel by Liz Moore, a writer who’s previously tackled AI and genetics programs, moves from New York City to the suburbs, obesity, books, and other eclectic stories in both familiar and unfamiliar spaces. Like the two previous novels (I haven’t read her first novel, a refurbished MFA novel) I liked this one a lot, and it feels more similar to her second novel Heft than to her next novel The Unseen World. We begin our narrator, a single mom and police […]

“He had been pretending, then, to look into his past, when really he was looking into some alternate reality, some different version of his own history, some unseen world.”

This was an outstanding book and I don’t want to give too much away so I apologize for the brevity of my review. Just know that I emphatically recommend Liz Moore’s The Unseen World! Ada Sibelius is being raised by her single father, David, in late 1970s Boston. Like her father Ada is very intelligent, prodigal even. She is home schooled by her father at his research lab in everything from computer science to literature and while she has no friends her own age she is […]

Family drama meets science fiction

December 30, 2017 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

4.5 stars. This book was reviewed by both narfna and Fiat.Luxury who both raved about it. I can see why after reading it! It will absolutely be going on my list of Swiss Army recommendations list. I think most readers would like it, if not love it. Genre: Family drama with a little science fiction and mystery thrown in Read this if you loved: Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng or All the Birds in the Sky by Charlie Jane Anders In a […]

A kissing book & some young adult fiction

May 25, 2017 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

The Hating Game by Sally Thorne 3 stars I don’t normally read romances, with the exception of my beloved Outlanders, but y’all recommended Kulti and I really liked that, so I thought I’d give this other highly rated one a shot. I didn’t love it, but it was cute. I listened to the audio version, and hearing the name “Joshua Templeton” repeated over and over varied from obnoxious to over the top hysterical, depending on my mood. I liked Lucy, but I have trouble getting behind the whole “I’ve loved you all along which […]

“Hello,” it said.

May 17, 2017 by scootsa1000 2 Comments

I’ve been sitting on my review of this one for a little while, not quite sure about what I want to say or how I want to say it. I do know that I’m so grateful for other reviewers like Fiat.Luxury, badkittyuno, and narfna for bringing it to my attention. I love when a book I knew nothing about, had never seen or heard about, suddenly jumps onto my radar when someone whose book opinions I trust talks about it. The Unseen World has a […]
