Rated PG-16 and odd

Artichoke Tales by Megan Kelso

November 7, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Artichoke Tales by Megan Kelso is a very odd book. At first, I was enjoying this slow-paced story that seemed to have a point. But while I was busy trying to figure out who was who (as the artichoke heads and same tunic clothing made everyone look the same) I was sideswiped. There is a switch in the story and there was no warning. Are we “Then” or “Then-Then” or “Now”? Is this Ramona, Brigitte, or Dorian? (I picked those three as they are mother, daughter […]

I still can’t believe how much I disliked this book.

Portrait of a Thief by Grace D. Li

November 5, 2022 by narfna 2 Comments

This was one of my most anticipated books of the year, so naturally I chose it for one of my book clubs, because I like pushing books on willing victims. Joke was on me! We all hated it, every single one of us. What was this???? How could such a good premise biff it so hard? First of all, this is NOT a heist book. We spend approximately 5% of the book with the characters doing crime, and that is probably generous. There is also […]

“She looked down at her palms and understood – her being was implied, her potential thoughts and feelings coursing through her body, the names of everything she knew and those she didn’t yet, all in the perpetual existence in her fingertips.”

True Biz by Sara Nović

This was a really interesting read, but the ending left me unsatisfied. This is probably a book that a majority of the US population could stand to read for the topic alone, but for me, the story arc left just a little to be desired. I don’t necessarily need a happy ending, but I do need that feeling of completion you get with a well-told story, and I was missing that here, even if the book leading up to the ending was very well done […]

Stories bound together

Boundless by Jillian Tamaki

August 26, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Boundless is an odd, artistic, and it is its own special world. It is part graphic novel, part art book, and part short, illustrated stories. The themes created by Jillian Tamaki are familiar but are scattered about with new twists. Of course, sometimes the twists we know as well. It is just a combination that is combined to make that story, or that moment, and nothing else, for now. Each chapter is set up, to have its own look even though Tamaki is the illustrator […]

Lore of the Havamal by Cat Mihos

August 17, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Hávamál ‘Sayings of the high one’ a collection of old Norse poems containing advice for living, proper conduct and wisdom. Lore of the Havamal seems to be truer to the Norse Myths with some fun (and bizarre) thrown in to revise the Ragnarök myth. This explores the world not ending as planned and because of it, Odin becomes a grumpy bartender in Midgard. The images are graphic novel traditional and do not shy away from bloody bodies, BFW (Big F- Wolf), even bigger BFS (snake), […]

Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel

July 2, 2022 by narfna 4 Comments

30 Books in 30 Days, Vol. 2 Book 28/30 It’s too good! I loved it too much! This is like how I put off watching The Falcon and the Winter Soldier because I love Bucky too much. My feelings, THEY CANNOT BE CONTAINED WHY ARE YOU TRYING TO MAKE ME CONTAIN THEM. I was going to try and re-read this before I reviewed it to try and make some thoughts more thoughtful and coherent, but I just don’t have the time right now, even though […]
