Mesmerizing roller coaster

Cry Wolf Girl by Ariel Slamet Ries

September 19, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I think I dislike everything about this book, Cry Wolf Girl, yet it was an amazing read. I just could not put it down. There are no natural breaks so it was not like I could stop at the end of a chapter but that didn’t matter. I just wanted to gobble it up. The book makes you think, feel and question. There are clearly marked paths we are taking, but things are not straight forward. It is artistic. It is not what you think […]

If you want the sweet of The Snowman, look somewhere else

When the Wind Blows by Raymond Briggs

August 7, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

How do you make a book about The Bomb and War beautiful? As Raymond Briggs or actually, read their graphic novel titled When the Wind Blows. This is not The Snowman with its whimsy and sweetness. This is a book that will make you laugh, be sad, have an off chuckle (should I really be laughing at these poor people?), then you will not stop crying. This is an amazing Anti-War story that is not for the sensitive reader, but is a must read to […]

Try to look away from the game of living and watching living

Spectators by Brian K Vaughan

August 4, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Spectators by Brian K Vaughan and illustrator Niko Henrichon is a train wreck I could not stop reading. This graphic novel (due late fall 2025) is in the vein of Revival by Tim Seeley and artist Mike Norton, and The Walking Dead but with fewer zombies and more ghosts.  When I finished my reader copy (and in fact through it) I thought it was the most screwed up book I’ve read in a while! DAMN! What an awesome read! There is so much going on […]

Does this author ever write a bad book?

Spent: A Comic Novel by Alison Bechdel

August 1, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Spent: A Comic Novel by Alison Bechdel This graphic novel is not perfect, but it is darn close. There were just one or two small “bumps” for me. But overall fans will get a huge kick out of this. There is much happening and Bechdel uses their usual wit and observations to get the job done. Even if they cannot get the job of writing their new book or the TV script done. It is life during the years of 2020 to “now” (or around […]

Roaming pack of dogs and her own worn out memories to keep her company

Land of Mirrors by María Medem,

April 29, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Every so often I find myself reading a book that I think I like but am not sure. Land of Mirrors by María Medem, Aleshia Jensen (translator) and Daniela Ortiz (translator) is one of those books. It is a graphic novel, but does not flow necessarily as a “pure” one. There is something “different” about it. It might be because it is translated or it might be because of the almost abstract minimal illustrations. However, whatever the reason this is the most organized piece of […]

Inspiring Quotes from Children's Classics: For Growing Up by Hannah Barnaby

April 25, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

While there are mostly uplifting and positive quotations fill Inspiring Quotes from Children’s Classics: For Growing Up, there are one or two silly or maybe a bit not so “uplifting” ones that will make you chuckle. From classic quotes (Moby Dick) to contemporary reads (Princess Academy), there is a little bit of everything included. Therefore you can find Moomins and Christopher Paolini next to CS Lewis and Ramona the Pest. Sometimes, the phrase is not necessarily something I would consider “inspirational” or even has a […]
