The woman and the slave girl

Raging Clouds by Yudori

November 19, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Books sometimes find me. I was going to the library to pick up some I had ordered and Raging Clouds by Yudori was sitting off to the side of the entrance. I almost didn’t go that way to the checkout desk (I usually go left, not right) but something made me go right. And there it was. Fat, shiny and new. It was shyly facing away from me. And that’s the last time this book was shy. Even the librarian when I checked it out wasn’t […]

Marriage is just for the tax benifits and other life lessons

Will You Still Love Me If I Wet the Bed? by Liz Prince

Look Back and Laugh by Liz Prince

October 21, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

A while back I read the graphic novel, Tomboy by Liz Prince. It was a fun memoir about being a kid that made me wonder about adult Liz. Who is she now? Or at least when her works were published. I found 2018 as the most recent autobiographical work, 2023 for Science Comics: Frogs: Awesome Amphibians (from First Second) and Adventure Time Compendium Vol. 1 in 2024 with other contributors.  Adult Liz is not much different than kid Liz. A bit awkward, weird, funny, has […]

Silly ol’ book

How a Bear Became a Book: The Collaboration That Created Winnie-the-Pooh by Annette Bay Pimentel

October 21, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

A clever ol’ story about a clever and silly ol’ bear is what you learn about in How a Bear Became a Book: The Collaboration That Created Winnie-the-Pooh. The pieces fit as if you’re reading a Winnie the Pooh story, the illustrations as if reading a WTP book and they come together to make a modern classic. It is less a “solid story” and more of a poetic telling of how a bear came into existence. Things are less hard facts but taking the facts […]

Greed, pretty princesses and monsters

Darkly She Goes by Hubert

October 9, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

After reading Darkly She Goes by Hubert and illustrated by Vincent Mallié (translated by L Benson and color by Bruno Tatti) I realized that I will be haunted by Hubert’s writing. After reading Beauty by them, I figured nothing would shock me about their style. But Darkly She Goes is a terribly odd, weird, insane ride. There were unlikable characters, situations and the ending was unsatisfying. The images were dark, violent and awkward. Yet, I was mesmerized from page one and could not stop reading. […]

Her voice

Wolf Lake, White Gown Blown Open: Poems by Diane Seuss

October 9, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

A friend of mine who is also a writer, poet, editor and constant learner recommended the poet Diane Seuss. Of course, my kid self said, SEUSS? Well that’s a hoot. And I am sure she is tired of people asking and/or joking about it, so I’ll just leave that there and talk about Wolf Lake, White Gown Blown Open: Poems (Juniper Prize for Poetry) instead.  And I’m not really sure what to say about things. It has a unique modern voice with obvious classical influences, […]

And you thought Disney had issues

Beauty by Hubert

October 8, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Beauty by Hubert is the ultimate comment of society. Women, beauty, power and more all come to a head in bloody battles, violent and several sexual situations such as rape, borderline incest, and more horrific things than the last. This is not a Happily Ever After Fairy Tale, this is the bloody reality of pain, hunger, obsessions, lust, greed and cruelty. When Beauty wins a wish from a fairy she helps escape from being trapped in the form of a toad, she sets off events […]
