Another contemporary romance with rich and powerful Texans

February 28, 2016 by Sophia 13 Comments

After reading Brown-Eyed Girl earlier this year, I decided to read another book from Lisa Kleypas’s contemporary romance series (albeit in random and reverse order) and picked up Blue-Eyed Devil (2008). This series focuses on the love lives of the Travis family. The Travis family is a prominent, wealthy Texas family consisting of a powerful patriarch and four siblings. Haven, the only girl (and possibly the youngest?) is at the wedding of her eldest brother (one of the books I haven’t read yet) when she first sees Hardy […]

Disappointment from Kleypas

February 8, 2016 by Sophia Leave a Comment

Cold-Hearted Rake (2015) is Lisa Kleypas’s latest historical romance. I was already warned that it was disappointing for a Kleypas novel, so I went in with lower expectations. And it’s a good thing that I did, as I wasn’t drawn in by the characters. Although some of the side characters were entertaining, this one is pretty forgettable. Kathleen was married to an Earl for three days–an Earl from a family known for their temper, risk-taking, and short lives. Devon Ravenel, a supposed but not very convincing […]

You deserve somebody better girl

January 28, 2016 by Mikki Blu 12 Comments

Lisa Kleypas has written so many books that I loved that maybe I was anticipating this one too much!  It didn’t live up to my lofty expectations. Not that it was colossally bad, but my attention wandered as I read, I found myself skimming parts, and the romance I expected was lack luster. Devon Ravenel is the rake of this story, and as rakes are wont to do he enjoys his life of wine, women and debauchery.  Then his cousin dies, leaving him with an […]

New Year, New Kleypas

January 24, 2016 by Rachie3879 3 Comments

I was super excited to read Lisa Kleypas’ new book (and opener of a new series of historical romances) Cold-Hearted Rake. After my last book, I needed something light, refreshing and easy like a romance. Though this wasn’t quite as awesome as some of Kleypas’ past hits, it definitely fit the bill. And it felt appropriate to kick off CBR8 with a romance, as I owe CBR for getting me into them. Cold-Hearted Rake is the story of Devon Ravenel (the aforementioned ‘rake’), who has […]

He’s romantic for a stalker

January 12, 2016 by Sophia 4 Comments

I’ve read Lisa Kleypas before, but I had not ventured into her contemporary romance novels before. I’m a fan of contemporary and it’s never too late to start, so I began with Brown-Eyed Girl (2015). This was a quick, generally fun read, but nothing grabbed me. Ultimately, it was pretty forgettable. Avery Crosslin is a wedding planner who started a business with her half-sister Sofia. She meets Joe Travis, a friend of the groom, at a wedding she’s planning. He is very rich, very sexy, and […]

Ms. Kleypas returns to historical romance

November 16, 2015 by Malin 1 Comment

3.5 stars Devon Ravenel, along with his younger brother West, are the last of a long line of rakish Ravenels. When their cousin, who neither of the brothers could stand dies, Devon unexpectedly inherits an earldom and the accompanying town house, estate and lands. The brothers show up to survey the inheritance when they discover that their cousin had only been married for three days when he managed to get himself thrown off a high-spirited horse in a fit of the legendary Ravenel temper. He […]
