A classic romance re-read

June 23, 2016 by Beth Ellen 7 Comments

This will be my first time reviewing a re-read here on the CBR, but with this re-read I realized, I did not remember this book at all. 2013 was a heady time for me. I was following the CBR for the first time and discovering all sorts of new authors, especially in my favorite genre of romance. The ladies on here kept mentioning Lisa Kleypas so I finally went to the library and got one out. Fast forward to a month later… and I’ve read […]

No young woman wants to get married after reading Tolstoy

June 19, 2016 by Malin Leave a Comment

Lady Helen Ravenel has lived a very sheltered existence on her family’s estate and spent much of her life in mourning for one family member or another. Until very recently, the estate was so deeply mired in debt that Helen and her younger sisters were unlikely to have any dowries and it was very important that Helen and her sisters marry rich men. The current Earl, Helen’s cousin (who inherited the estate after the death of their brother and in short order did his best […]

Better Than the Last, I’ll Still Read the Next One

June 9, 2016 by Mrs. Julien 5 Comments

Marrying Winterbourne is the second book in the current Lisa Kleypas historical romance Ravenel series, and, while it is better than its predecessor, Cold-Hearted Rake, it still not up to the standard of her classics or even her stronger books.  Spending insufficient time with the love story, though plenty with the smolder, it started with a wallflower and a rake, Kleypas’s forte, and swiftly landed in Big Misunderstanding territory – which experienced romance readers will tell you means the leads’ problems could be solved with one honest […]

A for Improvement

June 7, 2016 by Ellepkay 6 Comments

This book a nice return to form for Lisa Kleypas.  She is one of my top two favorite historical authors, and the last book (Cold Hearted Rake) was a huge let down.  This is the second book in the Ravenel series, and I’m liking the Victorian setting. The set up for this story in Rake was that Helen Ravenel is a very sheltered, slightly fragile young woman looking to *maybe* break out of her shell.  Rhys Winterborne (in the vein of many Kleypas heroes) is […]

Not Your Typical Romance

May 15, 2016 by Sophia 4 Comments

I have continued with my out-of-order reading of Lisa Kleypas’s contemporary romance novels surrounding the lives and loves of the wealthy, Texas, Travis family. Sugar Daddy (2010) is pretty unique and not at all what I was expecting–Kleypas deliberately failed to follow the tried and true romance protocol. Liberty Jones grew up in the small, dusty town of Welcome, Texas. Her father died on an oil rig when she was younger, and her mother hasn’t has the best taste in men since. When Liberty is a […]

I Think Lisa Kleypas was working through some issues

March 3, 2016 by Emmalita 11 Comments

Lisa Kleypas’ Blue-Eyed Devil and Smooth Talking Stranger are two of my inexplicable comfort reads. They have their good parts and bad parts, but they are not stellar books. I didn’t particularly like either of them when I got them, but I got them both as ebooks, so I have read each of them multiple times, because there they are.  I’m scrolling through my kindle and instead of the many long languishing books I haven’t read, I read these two.  It probably says things about […]
