An important topic, but a “meh” mystery.

November 4, 2017 by bonnie Leave a Comment

Many of my CBR friends have read this book and raved about it, and the mini-series has brought Big Little Lies into a new cultural forefront. I decided to watch the mini-series, but because I am a by-the-book person, I decided to read the book first. This was actually quite a slow read for me, and there are lots of elements I’d like to unpack. This is the story of three women: Madeline, Celeste, and Jane. Each of them has a child in a new […]

Big Suspense, Big Time Fun, Little Criticism

August 8, 2017 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

It has been a bit since I was absolutely OBSESSED with a story, and finding out whodunnit, but Big Little Lies captured me from head to toe. I went into the novel knowing of the successful HBO miniseries and seeing trailers with competitive women jogging on the beach, and I wasn’t sure it was my cup of tea but I listened to the bajillion ladies I know who said, “OMG READ THIS BOOK” and they were all correct. Firstly, and importantly, I did this on […]

There are three things in life for which we are never prepared: triplets

July 31, 2017 by Lynn Leave a Comment

Lyn, Cat, and Gemma Kettle, beautiful thirty-three-year-old triplets, seem to attract attention everywhere they go. Together, laughter, drama, and mayhem seem to follow them. But apart, each is dealing with her own share of ups and downs. Lyn has organized her life into one big checklist, Cat has just learned a startling secret about her marriage, and Gemma, who bolts every time a relationship hits the six-month mark, holds out hope for lasting love. In this wise, witty, and hilarious novel, we follow the Kettle […]

Truly, Madly, Meh

July 31, 2017 by Lynn 1 Comment

Liane Moriarty is a favorite around here, and I remember reading, but not reviewing (I think that was the year I dropped the ball), The Husband’s Secret and really enjoying it. Boss read it just before me, so I had someone to chat with about it. And while I haven’t gotten around to Big Little Lies yet, everyone seems to love it. So it made sense to pick up anything by Moriarty in hardback for $1 at a yard sale. And it was…okay. At the […]

Too Favorable to the Stalker?

July 30, 2017 by ASKReviews Leave a Comment

Best for: Someone who wants a quick read with some interesting explorations of loss. In a nutshell: Ellen (they hypnotist) has just started a relationship with Patrick. Patrick’s wife died seven years ago, when their son was only a year old. Saskia was Patrick’s first relationship after his wife died, and after they broke up, Saskia began to stalk Patrick. It continues. Line that sticks with me: “You weren’t meant to admit, even to yourself, how badly you wanted love. The man was meant to […]

Short and satisfying beach read

July 24, 2017 by kella Leave a Comment

Picked this up off a paperback sale rack when I was looking for a light, easy, vacation read – and it didn’t disappoint. Cecilia accidentally stumbles upon a sealed envelope in her attic – addressed to her by her husband, with the instructions to only open it after his death.  The problem is that her husband is very much alive, and when she asks him about it, it is very clear that he doesn’t want her to open it.   Naturally she does, and discovers […]
