Dammit, liane.

Ive been on a Liane Moriarty kick recently, and this is solidly middle of the pack.  I enjoyed reading it – her books are nothing if not enjoyable – but this one felt a bit like a first draft. I don’t want to give away the big secrets here – Moriarty does an amazing job with keeping her readers entertained with the how of a whodunit as much as the who and the why – but the actual twists are enjoyable to read even as […]

You could jump so much higher when you had somewhere safe to fall.

Spoil yourself for this book before you read it. The number one complaint I read in the reviews for it were that people got frustrated trying to figure out what happened at the barbeque, and since that’s the least important thing about the book, they were underwhelmed when it finally did happen. So yes, spoil yourself, and then go in and read Truly Madly Guilty, Moriarty’s book about friendship, trauma, and how trauma shapes our lives. Non-spoilery summary as follows. Three couples have a barbeque […]

A Unique Perspective on a Tired Premise

April 19, 2018 by octothorp 1 Comment

I bought this looking for something fluffy for a plane ride and was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I mean really, amnesia? That’s such an old horse that there’s nothing left to beat, it’s done, it’s over, even soap operas are tired of it. But while no one is nominating Moriarty for a Pulitzer, this was a much better book than one could have expected from the synopsis.  I’m lucky I bought it on name recognition and dove right in; I had no […]

Cuz you’re really gonna be surprised! When it happens!

I feel like my reviews as a whole have been more negative than my actual opinion of books would indicate. I liked this book, but I would’ve cut about 150 pages from it as the “big reveal” 2/3 of the way through was fairly predictable and I loved what came after. But ooohhhhh that stalling to get to the big secret telegraphed early on hurt, you guys.  We know.  Something happens to the kid, the one the author conspicuously avoids discussing after THE BARBECUE.  If […]

Barbecue intrigue

February 23, 2018 by Carriejay Leave a Comment

There’s a reason you should write reviews the moment you’ve finished the book, because otherwise you’ll be sitting here faced with a blank page struggling to remember what the hell happened at that barbecue of doom anyway. But a trip home to the UK and dealing with two babies with jetlag (as well as my own, oh god never fly with babies) has meant this got pushed to the bottom of the queue. But I am determined to do this, damn it. And the three […]

I didn’t care for it, but I couldn’t put it down

January 3, 2018 by lowercasesee Leave a Comment

I’m going to preface my CBR by saying that I am a book snob. I have referred to Dan Brown books as “entry level”. When it comes to books, my boyfriend says I am everyone he hates on the internet (I think he means it fondly?). So. Yeah. And I read Big Little Lies and holy smokes did I love that book. My whole book club loved that book, we talked about literally nothing else the whole night we met and how often does that […]
