The sky looks comfortingly mundane compared to the garish kaleidoscope of the stained glass. It makes Rose yearn to be reliving any one of a thousand ordinary days spent with her ordinary older sister, who has now done this extraordinary thing and died.

The Last Anniversary by Liane Moriarty

January 3, 2019 by melanir Leave a Comment

Every time I find a Liane Moriarty book that I haven’t read yet, I celebrate. However much I end up liking the book, I know that I’m in for some kind of treat. Her writing is engaging, and her characters lively. No exception here. I quite enjoyed the book, despite some irritation at one of the character arcs. It might be my second favorite Moriarty book. The book is about the various relationships between sisters, daughters, mothers, grandmothers, and friends. Oh sure, there is the […]

One wish

December 28, 2018 by octothorp Leave a Comment

Damn, Liane, why you gotta do my girl Catriona like that? I love that Moriarty doesn’t spare any of her heroes or demonize her villains utterly, but this was as brutal to Catriona as any of Moriarty’s writing is capable.  I won’t lie and say that it didn’t have a lot to do with seeing a lot of myself in Cat, the triplet (with flighty spacey Gemma and no-nonsense Lyn rounding out the trio) whose mundane happiness is made more interesting with a cynical streak, […]

Big Little Cannonball

October 30, 2018 by octothorp 6 Comments

In addition to being my 52nd book for CBR10, this is the perfect selection for bingo – for god’s sake, my Brain Candy choice has an exploding lollipop on the front cover. I’m so happy this one’s my cannonball book, I just adore Liane Moriarty’s writing. I’ll read pretty much anything she’s written, and I’m reaching the end of that list, so soliciting recommendations from my fellow cannonballers in this wheelhouse.  Her books are saucy without being trashy, serious without being grave, and always a […]

Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.

This book fills the Brain Candy square on my bingo card. That’s not to say it isn’t a great read, cause it really is, but I read Moriarty’s books when I want something good but also light and not depressing. Like a really good pastry for the brain. I think this one is one of Moriarty’s better books, as she manages to tread the line between making a character sympathetic even though their actions are reprehensible. The titular hypnotist is Ellen O’Farrell, who recently started […]

Episode 1-30: The Kids Aren’t Alright

August 13, 2018 by prisco Leave a Comment

https://killingmykindle.com/2018/08/13/episode-1-30-the-kids-arent-alright/ Wherein I review: 116. Marlena by Julie Buntin 117. Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty 118. The Money Shot (Teddy Fay #2) by Stuart Woods Kids are the f–king worst!  Marlena reads like an AA confessional, part ghost story, that really has no third act.  Big Little Lies gave me the chance to read a novel that has been turned into a television show where I know one of the actors.  Weird, but fun, especially since the original is Australian, so now I’m picturing […]

All glory to the hypnotoad.

You guys, I may have lost perspective on whether Liane Moriarty is a good author or not.  I kinda don’t care; I’ve been devouring her novels like cupcakes. If you’re looking at the nutritional info on a cupcake, you’re doing cupcakes AND nutrition wrong. There was a long weekend, I was at the beach, and I certainly didn’t feel like A Brief History of Time. Anyway, this book centers on middle class life in Australia, so it’s a real departure for Moriarty.  (I honestly wonder […]
