Fine, I Liked It.

Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty

September 12, 2021 by Ellesfena Leave a Comment

CBR Bingo: Libations (took me a long while to realize that was a broken lolly) A couple years ago I watched HBO’s adaptation of this book, and found myself completely sucked in. I binged both seasons in just a few days, and Laura Dern screaming “Thank youuuuuuu!” has lived rent-free in my head ever since. After I watched the series I picked up the book. I got to the part where Madeline introduces herself using her full name, and even though that didn’t bother me […]

Triplets struggle against lifelong stereotypes

Three Wishes by Liane Moriarty

July 20, 2021 by Merryn Leave a Comment

CBR13bingo: Libations I read this book after trawling through my extensive unread collection on my Kindle looking for something with food on the cover for Bingo.  It was an easy enjoyable read.  A bit like a well-made cupcake. It’s a very Liane Moriarty book, about three sisters, triplets, struggling to break out of the stereotypes they have been cast in since their youth.  There’s the driven one, the wild one, the ditzy one.  They all live in picturesque housing that would look great on TV, […]

Likable Rich White People Problems

Truly Madly Guilty by Liane Moriarty

March 13, 2021 by dsbs42 2 Comments

This is my sixth Moriarty book. Like many people, Big Little Lies was the first (and best, for my money), but they’ve all been good, so I keep reading. In Truly Madly Guilty, we meet Clementine and Sam, Erika and Oliver, and Tiffany and Vid, each going about, living their ordinary, suburban lives, until something awful happens at an ordinary, friendly barbecue hosted by the latter couple in their lavish back yard. Two months later, the characters deal with the fall-out from this event and wonder […]

So many Cannonballers can’t be wrong

Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty

March 15, 2020 by KimMiE" Leave a Comment

I’ve seen Liane Moriarty’s books getting mostly positive reviews on this site, so when I saw a random copy of Big Little Lies in the break room at work, nestled among old business standbys like Good to Great and piles of free Westways magazines, I snatched it up. I am not the target demographic for this novel. I am not a suburban housewife, nor a single mother, nor a grade school teacher, all of whom would be able to identify with the characters more than I […]

Not a Moriarty Gem, but Fun Nonetheless

Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty

January 15, 2020 by randirock Leave a Comment

Nine strangers come together for a ten-day self-improvement retreat at a health spa in Australia called Tranquillum House, each desiring their own unique results – Frances, an out-of-touch romance novelist; Jessica and Ben, lottery winners with a troubled marriage; Lars, a good-looking divorce lawyer; Tony, a retired Australian Rules Footballer; Carmel, a depressed mother obsessed with her weight; and the Marconis, a grieving family of three. They are welcomed by three intense employees – owner Masha and her two minions. At first, the retreat seems […]

Whoops for last year’s books

Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty

January 2, 2020 by lowercasesee 1 Comment

I think this may be the second Cannonball I’ve kicked off with a Liane Moriarty book. I’d prefer not to make a habit of it. Ah well. For me, her books have become kind of a “if you’ve read one, you’ve read them all.” This particular flavor was better than What Alice Forgot but not as good as Big Little Lies. Impossible to put down, of course, but that doesn’t necessarily mean worth reading. This one gives us a slight variation on her unreliable narrator in […]
