Faults and Double Faults…

Apples Never Fall by Liane Moriarty

April 16, 2023 by acrackedkettle Leave a Comment

What’s the word for anti-drama? Whatever it is, it might be my favorite kind of drama. I loved this book and it follows a similar anti-drama formula author Liane Moriarty used in What Alice Forgot and The Husband’s Secret to great effect. All three books start with a dramatic, Lifetime-movie-esque premise (in this case, middle-aged retiree and mother of four vanishes, possibly connected to a mysterious stranger) and then use this to explore the most fascinating details of… just, normal life… getting married, raising kids, […]

Apples Never Fall by Liane Moriarty

Stan and Joy Delaney have been married for fifty years. They met in their youth playing tennis, and brought their love of the sport into their family and business, coaching their four children alongside paying customers. All the kids were talented, but none of them made it. Stan’s one close call with coaching greatness crashed and burned when the prodigy dumped him for another coach. The family has its ups and downs, but they’re happy right? One night a young woman knocks at Stan and […]

Lots and lots and lots and lots of tennis. But also maybe some murder?

Apples Never Fall by Liane Moriarty

I asked my sister if she read this book, because we both love Liane Moriarty. Her answer was “Ugh, the tennis one?”. Yes dear readers, this is the tennis one. If there are 10,000 words in this book (it’s long, so I’m sure there are way more), 7,500 of them are related to tennis. It didn’t really bother me, but apparently it bothered my sister! It’s funny, and I know I’ve said this before, but Liane Moriarty is the only author I seem to enjoy […]

“When she looked at photos of her children when they were little, she sometimes thought, Did I notice how beautiful they were? Was I actually there? Did I just skim the surface of my entire damned life?”

Cannonball Read Bingo: Snake I was in the middle of dragging my way through “The Three Body Problem” (good book, but woof, is it dense) and saw this one on a perusal of my library’s “Hot Reads” shelf, the newest from Liane Moriarty. I greatly enjoyed the audio version of “Big Little Lies” and wanted to give her another go, this time reading it the old-fashioned way. I figured it would be a bit of summer fun reading, and I was right. This book is […]

“We were so happy.”

What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty

30 Books in 30 Days, Vol. 2 Book 24/30 This one was a long time coming. I’ve owned it for years, and recommended it to a handful of friends, most of whom were confused why I was recommending a book to them I hadn’t read, but I know about books even if I haven’t read them! And they liked it! So! This is the second book of two that I had on my TBR that was about a woman getting a head injury and losing […]

“That was the secret of a happy marriage. Step away from the rage.”

Apples Never Fall by Liane Moriarty

At this point, I’ve read a lot of books by Liane Moriarty. I’ve liked some better than others, but I’ve found them all interesting. So, it wasn’t difficult to pick up Apples Never Fall (2021) when I saw it was at the library. Although Apples Never Fall wasn’t as compulsively readable as some of her books, there were some good characters with some dysfunctional family dynamics. Stan and Joy Delaney just sold their tennis school, and are figuring out retirement in their empty nest. Their four children: Amy, Logan, […]
