I think I just wanted this to be a novel.

Once Ghosted, Twice Shy (Reluctant Royals, #2.5) by Alyssa Cole

March 28, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

I liked this little novella less upon finishing it than I do now. It’s been a month since I finished it; should have written a review at the time. Story of my life, print it on a t-shirt. But in fairness to me, I was a bit distracted that weekend from the annual wonderfest known as the Tucson Festival of Books, a beautiful celebration of literacy and imagination and yummy food that is always held on or near my birthday, so happy birthday to me. […]

“Maybe I still haven’t become me. I don’t know how you tell for sure when you finally have.”

The Miseducation of Cameron Post by Emily M. Danforth

March 26, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

This is one of those books I can appreciate more intellectually than feel in my gut, though I think I’m going to chalk that up more to the style than anything else. I wasn’t in the mood for a slow, thoughtful, book that is more traditionally literary in style than I usually prefer. This book is LONG as well, almost 500 pages. Which is on the high end for contemporary YA. Aside from my own style preferences, I have no complaints. It’s a beautifully written […]

Gender Queer: a Memoir by Maia Kobabe

March 8, 2019 by Emmalita 3 Comments

Note: I misgendered the author in the 4th paragraph. I’d love to blame autocorrect, but it was entirely my own brain defaulting to the comfort of binary pronouns. Brains like to be comfortable and I was raised in an aggressively binary culture. That makes it more imperative that I get comfortable with discomfort, try harder, and be willing to correct others and accept correction. Maia Kobabe’s graphic novel GenderQueer: A Memoir is a beautiful gift to the world, filled with pain and compassion. Maia uses […]

The least toxically masculine thing you will ever read.

Check, Please!: #Hockey, Vol. 1 by Ngozi Ukazu

January 11, 2019 by narfna 3 Comments

So if you go over to Goodreads and scroll down the first page of reviews, you’ll see that nearly every review starts along the lines of, “THIS WAS SO ADORABLE.” Or “THE CUTEST EVER I’M DYING.” And now that I have read this, I too, can sympathize. This was monstrously precious. I am compelled to say this because of how cute. Check, Please! is a sweet little web comic that is finishing up later this year. It follows Eric “Bitty” Bittle, a former champion figure […]

Sadly, a disappointment after I’d been looking forward to it for years.

Pulp by Robin Talley

December 31, 2018 by narfna Leave a Comment

I liked this well enough, but I’m beginning to wonder if Talley isn’t a one-hit wonder for me. I LOVED her first book, but the ones I’ve read after have just been meh. I’m especially sad because as soon as I heard the premise for this book I immediately wanted it in my hands (a young girl from our time who is a lesbian begins researching lesbian pulp fiction from the 1950s for a school project, and fixates on a particular author, and the narrative is split between […]

Swashbuckling ladies who are scientists go on an adventure.

November 29, 2018 by narfna Leave a Comment

I think I am in the minority in liking the first book in this series better. I just liked Monty as a narrator so much, whereas everyone else (even several people who didn’t like the first book at all) have really liked this one, and Felicity, better. And she is awesome, no doubt. This series overall is really fun, but I had the same problems with this one that I did the first one, but times about a thousand. It’s about a year after the […]
