Good Morning Romance

The AM Show by T.B. Markinson and Miranda MacLeod

June 14, 2022 by Sofi Keren Leave a Comment

I love a book club. It’s so rare outside of them that we’re all reading the same books at the same time, and talking about books is one of my favorite things. At one point I was in three different book clubs, trying to juggle all the books and their deadlines. That may have been a tad excessive. We moved to virtual discussions during the lockdown phase of the pandemic, but real discussions were harder to have over Zoom, and only one of the book […]

A calico cat sitting upright next to a the book, "Record of a Spaceborn Few" by Becky Chambers.

“If trying something new was valid, then keeping something old was, too…. Life meant death, always. But by the same token, death meant life.”

Record of a Spaceborn Few by Becky Chambers

Becky Chambers continues to keep me in awe of her writing.  Record of a Spaceborn Few is the third book in the “Wayfarer Series”.  It tangentially ties into the first book as one of the main characters, Tessa Santoso, is sister to Captain Ashby Santoso, of the spaceship Wayfarer, in A Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet.  This book is centered on The Exodus Fleet, the last humans to leave Earth when the environment collapsed hundreds of years ago.  They wandered for generations until […]

Wicked Beauty by Katee Robert

June 12, 2022 by wicherwill 2 Comments

I might be rounding up for this book–I picked this up because I really loved Neon Gods, but these next two entries just haven’t really kept my attention as much. This time around, the old Ares (head of Olympus’ armed forces) has passed away. The spot of Ares is filled with the victor of a series of physical trials–sort of a American Ninja/Triwizard maze/Gladiator set. Helen (of Troy), in this series one of the sisters of the current Zeus (nee Perseus) and a member of one […]

Excellent sequel (not follow up) to the first book

The Perfect Crimes of Marian Hayes by Cat Sebastian

June 12, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

CW from author: blood, main character who survived dangerous pregnancy and for whom any future pregnancy would be dangerous (note: there is no pregnancy in this book), past arrest and imprisonment, gun violence, non-graphic allusion to sexual assault, elderly parent with Alzheimer’s disease, postpartum depression I might be rounding up from 4.5 to 5, but I’m so happy with this book that we’re going to five star it. I think I’ve been a bit stingy with the 5s in favor of 4s, so there might […]

The Witch Can’t Love

Sweet & Bitter Magic by Adrienne Tooley

June 7, 2022 by Sofi Keren Leave a Comment

Tamsin is a powerful witch with a terrible condition: she can’t love. The ability was taken from her by the Coven as punishment after she drastically misused her powers in her youth. And so, in exile in a rural town, she does spells for the townspeople in exchange for the love that they hold, which she always uses up too quickly. Wren has spent her entire life caring for her ill father, so much so that she can do nothing else. She holds a secret […]

Cool for the Summer by Dahlia Adler

June 5, 2022 by wicherwill 1 Comment

CW: mild homophobia when characters come out, but it’s contextualized very quickly I think this came across my Kindle because it’s the already released novel of an author whose next novel was featured in Goodreads’ “Books We’re Looking Forward To” or “Celebrating Pride Month.” It’s definitely something I picked up and then read within a few days, which is not something that happens often given how stacked by TBR list is and how choreographed my hold/loan dances are with the various library cards I have […]
