The woman who supposedly said the only thing smaller than Hemingway’s talent was his d%ck…

Djuna: The Extraordinary Life of Djuna Barnes by JL Macy

July 19, 2024 by BlackRaven 1 Comment

I knew I had my cbr16bingo Scandal book when I read the line “your soft saliva, loosed with orgy, drip!”  This category was giving me trouble. I thought I was going to do a children’s graphic novel series for it (there is one big scandal that leads to several littler ones by the looks of the first one I read) but how could I not pick Djuna: The Extraordinary Life of Djuna Barnes as my Scandal book? Her whole life was a scandal!  She was […]

“Miss, you have a jellyfish in your eye”

The Jellyfish by Boum

July 12, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

cbr16bingo Dun-Dun (dread of the medical condition our main character has) What I expected from the cover of The Jellyfish by Boum (translated by Robin Lang and Helge Dascher) was not what I got.  I got my physical copy of the book soon after it came out, but it took months to get to it. Then a weekend came, I tripped over the box that I had put it in (moving things around) and decided it was time to clean up things. And when I […]

“You look better than me, and I’m a real woman!” “Who’s that beached whale on the floor?” “You’re so well spoken!”

Why Are You So Sensitive?: Navigating Everyday, Unintended Microaggressions by Billie Lee and Gina Torino

July 8, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

cbr16bingo Disco Disco is a very loose connection but one I can make fit. You see, the category mentions gay Americans and the 1960s and 1970s. And the one thing I have learned in my reading the last few years, shows that first, this is not “ancient history” but less than 50 years ago in some areas. And the fact that we might think we’ve come a long way with equality and “political correctness” we still have a long way to go. As this book […]

An unpopular opinion for a popular subject as my first Bingo Review

A Song for Nolan by Rushie Ellenwood

July 5, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

cbr16bingo  Pride  (the character is non-binary)  This is going to be an unpopular opinion. I did not like A Song for Nolan by Rushie Ellenwood and Sally Chen. Now, let me say I like the theme of a nonbinary child and their friends and this situation they find themselves in, but the execution didn’t exactly work for me. Nolan is a non-binary child doing what any child would do: Getting ready for their friend’s birthday party. Maybe they are a bit more eccentric than some, […]

I picked the colorful images but there is a variety that you’ll find inside

Hockney: A Graphic Life (BioGraphics) by Simon Elliott

June 21, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I could tell you every little piece of the puzzle that makes up Hockney: A Graphic Life (BioGraphics) by Simon Elliott, but then you would not have a reason to read it, and I think you really should. If you are not the usual reader for graphic novels; do not know much about David Hockney; or even if you are not a huge fan of biographies, don’t worry about it. This format might be a great way to start it for adults. This book is […]

You’ll never look at a cinnamon roll the same way

Off Sides by Andi Jaxon

June 21, 2024 by katie71483 2 Comments

I really enjoyed Andi Jaxon’s Off Sides. It is a MM stand-alone in her Darby U universe. It is not necessary for you to have read her other Darby U books, but it would probably help you understand what is going on with the peripheral characters. (It actually makes me think of EL James’ Grey series, in that you’re seeing a lot of the same events, just through a different lived experience. The difference being that this one is actually well written.) Nick and Joey […]
