An excellent end to an excellent series

March 27, 2015 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

First of all, don’t read this unless you’ve read the first two books in the series — The Magicians and The Magician King. I read them both in June of 2012, and I wish I had reread them before tackling the final book, since it was hard to remember a lot of the story (it’s pretty convoluted, involving a lot of characters and twisty turns of plot). But I enjoyed the final book so much that I think I’ll just reread the whole series, start to finish, as soon […]

“It didn’t matter where you were, if you were in a room full of books you were at least halfway home.”

The Magician’s Land is an exciting and satisfying end to a trilogy that had its ups and downs, but was nevertheless entertaining and always delivered on complex characters. Not to draw too clear of a parallel between the main character, Quentin, and the author here — because I’m sure Lev Grossman is not, and never was, the little shit that Quentin started out as — but I genuinely feel that there is some symmetry between the quality and goal of each of the books and […]

C’mon, Luv. Let’s Go Do Druggy Sex Magic!

March 11, 2014 by Marc 1 Comment

[Sound the Second Novel Alarm! Spoilers for The Magicians ahead.  I mean it this time.] The Magicians was an exercise in literary frustration for me.  I loved it.  It was wonderful.  Its adherence to explaining away its every mystery absolutely infuriated me.  Reading it a second time allowed me to be well aware that the breathtakingly horrific things that occurred in the unfurling of Lev Grossman’s fantasy novel cioppino would not remain the unexplainable night terrors of a magical world beyond our reckoning and to simply enjoy the […]

Dear Authors of the World: ‘Dangerous’ doesn’t have to mean ‘Femme Fatale Sex Stripper.’ There are other options.

This was pretty good for an anthology, but I really prefer longer stories, as it really takes a talented author to make me care for characters in such a short period of time, or to have a plot immediately interesting enough to trump my interest in the characters. Short stories also tend more towards the self-important and annoying. Anyway, this was worth it just for the Martin and Sanderson stories alone, and there were several others I really enjoyed as well including ones from Robin […]
