…But Like So Many Unfortunate Events In Life, Just Because You Don’t Understand It, Doesn’t Mean It Isn’t So

The Bad Beginning, Book The First by Lemony Snicket

February 20, 2019 by Niki Leave a Comment

I did not read A Series of Unfortunate Events when they first came out.  I was a little too old, and I heard of them when the Jim Carey movie came out, but didn’t really get interested in it.  It wasn’t until the Netflix Series came out and it hooked the imagination of my son that the Series really revealed itself to me.  Once my son devoured all of the episodes of the tv show, he has moved on to voraciously reading the series.  I’m […]

Disney said it best: “What makes a Monster and what makes a Man?” (or in this case hero and villain)

Guys Read: Heroes and Villains by Jon Scieszka

February 18, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

This series rocks!  READ THEM! You need more? (sigh) Okay…… Guys Reads started around 10 years ago with Guys Write for Guys Read: Boys’ Favorite Authors Write About Being Boys. Jon Scieszka, however, is no stranger to getting boys to read. His Time Warp Trio series was his way of writing for the boys in his classroom who did not have anything to read. Flash forward a few years and Scieszka is knows for many picture books and novels, including the Guys Read series. I […]

The Final Putsch:

April 15, 2017 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

So this one begins the final push in the series. Actually, the previous two books did that, where we are no longer looking for guardians so much as following the orphans on the trail of their pursuits. One thing I really like about this book is that the orphans are pursuing Olaf and not the other way around. It flips the power a little. They are not as powerful and cannot do to him what he would do to them, but it’s a start. This […]

In which I rant about the TV show:

April 13, 2017 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

So this book began to give me the inkling of what was bothering me about the tv show. I have not read these books before and I thought, well, I will read ahead of the show and all will be well. But they screwed me over. I didn’t know that not only would they ruin the big surprises of the books, most of which I haven’t even gotten to yet, but they would do so for no particularly good reason. These books are mysteries. Plain […]

Daniel Handler is no Tim Curry, but it’s actually ok.

I wanted to outpace our watching of the Netflix show at my house, but we lost a little steam after the first two episodes. I liked them just fine and it’s a little disappointing in general, but good enough to keep going. So here’s the next two books (after I reviewed The Reptile Room awhile back). I listened to these two books while I did morning chores and then went on a long walk around town. I am on Spring Break and in order to […]

The Fool Monty

February 15, 2017 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

Play this song first: I am just a little too old to have enjoyed these books when they first came out. So a lot of their charm isn’t…..lost on me per se, but it fails me a little. Also, sometimes my life is a little too stressful to deal with books of pure stress, even if that’s kind of the point over all. It’s weird because I can handle all kinds of terrible stuff happening to all kinds of characters, but for some reason the […]
