YA author makes a solid transition to full A

Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo

December 9, 2019 by lowercasesee Leave a Comment

I am a sucker for books that take aim a privilege, even in such a fantastical way. Our main character, Alex, is an underdog lifted out of a drug den in California and transplanted into the hallowed halls of Yale so of course the bad guys are the privileged white dudes (and occasional lady). Even if they aren’t the specific overall bad buy, they’re all exposed to like really super suck in some way or another. Reading this book came with a nice side of schadenfreude. […]

Great author forcing herself into the confines of a genre=middling book.

Shadow and Bone (The Shadow and Bone Trilogy, #1) by Leigh Bardugo

December 3, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

Two things: 1. Not really sure why this is called Shadow and Bone? Sounds very dramatic, but not super relevant to actual plot or theme. Things with “bone” in the title were very in in 2012, I guess? 2. Very glad this series wasn’t my first exposure to Bardugo’s writing. I said this in a Goodreads status update, but although it’s not badly written, it’s nothing special either. Pretty standard YA fantasy with attending tropes and such, with flairs here and there of interesting worldbuilding. […]

I came into the Grishaverse backwards

Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

October 29, 2019 by Dome'Loki 2 Comments

I came across the Grishaverse backwards.  Last year I read a write up for Leigh Bardugo’s The Language of Thorns and was intrigued by the concept of a book of fairytales that characters in her Grishaverse would have read or been told, when they were children.  The piece said knowledge of the other books was not necessary to enjoy Language of Thorns and I put it on my Cannonball gift exchange wish list.  I was delighted to discover it in my gift box (Thank you, […]

“One could plot violent espionage and still hope for dessert.”

King of Scars (Nikolai Duology #1) by Leigh Bardugo

June 14, 2019 by alwaysanswerb Leave a Comment

I’m trash for the whole Grishaverse, so of course I loved this. If anyone else, like me, enjoyed both previous series and ever thought to themselves, “Hey, you know what would be great, a sequel to the Grisha trilogy that feels more thematically like Six of Crows?” you’re in luck! Because that’s this book. We’re back with some of our favorite characters from both all of the books, and they’ve all been through some shit, so they’re all a little bit (or a lot bit) […]

A promising start to a new series

King of Scars by Leigh Bardugo

May 12, 2019 by Malin Leave a Comment

Spoiler warning! While this is the start of a new series, it does follow on directly from Leigh Bardugo’s Grisha trilogy and her Six of Crows duology. While you will understand the plot fine if you haven’t read the previous books, you WILL be spoiled for events in both series. Spoilers may also appear in this review. Proceed at your own risk. From Goodreads, because I finished the audiobook two months ago (sigh): Nikolai Lantsov has always had a gift for the impossible. No one knows what he endured in […]

They’re not bad, they just are

Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

Seige and Storm by Leigh Bardugo

Ruin and Rising by Leigh Bardugo

I recognized the cover and remembered an old roommate of mine had these books and I think I borrowed and read at least one? But as I finally cracked open the trilogy for myself nothing felt familiar so maybe I just saw the cover a lot. I read Bardugo other series, set in the same broad universe, and was very impressed with how she told a new and very different story. I also want to go re-read Six of Crows, which I remember being better. But it […]
