Beyond the Himalaya Mountains

A Girl in the Himalayas by David Jesus Vignolli

October 12, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Environmental issues and man’s greed, pain, actions, and fear are countered by a young girl, Vijaya, and her new family and new friends of the other realm in this graphic novel. A Girl in the Himalayas has a unique feel. At first you get the feeling of the scene in the animated Disney move, Mulan, when the village was attacked, and the doll of the little girl is found. You then get a feeling of a child who has been orphaned and is raised by […]

Fantastic Tales of Nothing by Alejandra Green

January 28, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The back of this book, Fantastic Tales of Nothing by Alejandra Green, says if you like Amulet, Five Worlds and Estranged you will like this. And while I agree yes this is true, there are differences to the series you might want to look at: Amulet is light, like Fantastic, but Fantastic is a tad “meatier.” Five Worlds (or at least book one, which I read) might be closest, but again, Fantastic is meatier. However, Estranged is darker by a smidgen (not that it is […]

Two sisters, one folklore and a sea monster

The Daughters of Ys by M.T. Anderson

November 27, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I love M.T. Anderson and First Second books. However, there was something “off” about this graphic novel by Anderson, The Daughters of Ys. I am not sure if it was because I had such high hopes, or if the story was not organized, or that it was a folktale that I was unfamiliar with, but there were holes in it for me. I do like the idea of this folktale. The start of the tale is a flashback. There is a king who almost did […]

The Nixie of the Mill-Pond and Other European Stories by Kel McDonald

February 24, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Do not judge a book by the cover is probably the first thing I learned about books. However, sometimes you can, sometimes not and sometimes there are books that you do both. The Nixie of the Mill-Pond and Other European Stories is one of those books that you think you know what is going on (there will be a Nixie, which looks like a mermaid/banshee/fairy, that will do something in a mill-pond) but open it up and there is something completely different. On page one we […]

Pandora’s Legacy by Kara Leopard

December 2, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Pandora’s Legacy was one of those books that I judged by the cover. I know! One should not do that, but sometimes (especially with graphic novels) I figured I had an idea of the fantasy, realism and levels of scary vs. thriller. I do not like SCARY. Thriller on the other hand, I am a fan of. I like intellectual thrills Kara Leopard has a fun story taking on Greek myths. She might not follow the story a hundred percent (or at least how I […]

The Deep & Dark Blue by Niki Smith

November 19, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

There are a few weak spots in the story line of The Deep & Dark Blue. The largest two pieces are, first, it seems to start in the middle of the story. You do not learn who the two main characters, Hawke and Grayson, are right away but tossed into being introduced to a large plot point while being tossed into meeting a cousin of the twins at the same time. Yet, you are unaware right off he is a cousin. Or they are twins. […]
